Why was another agent, BZ, identified in some samples?
On 14 April, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov was reported in press reports in TASS and RT as suggesting that the OPCW designated laboratory in Switzerland (the Spiez Laboratory) identified BZ (a chemical weapons agent that is not in the Novichok family) in samples provided by the OPCW.
When a sample, such as one from Salisbury, is sent to an OPCW designated lab, it isn't sent on its own. There are "negative control samples" (made of a material similar to that in the authentic sample that has no detectable chemical weapons agent in it) and "positive control samples" (made of a material similar to that in the authentic sample that has been spiked to contain a chemical weapons agent or other relevant chemical in it).
For an active investigation of alleged use the samples are numbered and not otherwise identified so that each laboratory cannot tell them apart. In simple terms, the negative control samples protect against incorrect results from contaminated lab equipment; the positive control samples raise confidence in the lab work to identify a specific agent.
The spike has to be of a high quality and purity, and to a known standard. As there are no standards written for the Novichoks, another material would have to be used for the spike. A good candidate for this would be BZ. [Editorial note: when I suggested to someone familiar with the classified report that the spike might be BZ in this case I was not told I was wrong -- RG].
Thus, in an ideal world, each laboratory would report nothing detected in the negative control samples, report the spike chemical in the positive control samples and report the Novichok in the actual samples from Salisbury -- an overall detection of BZ and of the Novichok. Therefore, such a report from the laboratory does not constitute any suggestion that the Skripals were exposed to BZ.

On Monday evening, according to Anti-Corruption Foundation activist Vladislav Zdolnikov, Roskomnadzor added four “subnet masks” to its “out-load list,” which specifies the domains and websites Russian Internet providers are required to block.
The first three subnets “encrypt” 131,000 different IP addresses each, and the fourth subnet contains another 262,00 IP addresses, meaning that the Russian government has effectively banned more than 655,000 IP addresses owned by the company Amazon.

All six young men have been accused of involvement in a “terrorist community” (a criminal offense under Article 205.4 Part 2 of the Russian Federal Criminal Code). According to the FSB, the six had established an organization, known as the Network (Set). They planned a series of bomb blasts during the presidential election, in March, and the World Cup, in June and July, that would “sway the popular masses in order to subsequently destabilize the political situation [in Russia]” and set off an armed insurrection.
The Network allegedly had cells functioning in Moscow, Petersburg, Penza, and Belarus [an independent country]. On January 23, 2018, antifascist Viktor Filinkov was detained in Petersburg, followed two days later by Igor Shishkin. Friends and family could not find either of them for over a day. A court had remanded both of them in custody as members of the alleged “terrorist community.”
In Penza, relatives of the detained activists told how law enforcement officers had planted weapons in the men’s cars and flats, and subjected them to torture by shocking them with electrical wires and hanging them upside down. According to friends and loved ones, all the detained men had been airsoft enthusiasts.
“All they ever did was learn how to render first aid in field conditions and survive in the woods. Is that illegal?” Angelina Pchelintseva, Dmitry Pchelintsev’s wife, asked OVD Info.
