The word "patent" actually originally meant "openness." An early rationale for patents (actually "letters of patent" in the 1600s i believe) was not to protect inventors and encourage them to invent, but encourage them to disclose the nature of their inventions. The idea was that they would give up all secrecy to the government in return for some favor. The favor eventually became a monopoly on production of the invention, enforced by the government. The wording of the US patent system today still supports this idea- the inventor must disclose all designs / production tecniques to the public.
