Nikolai Patrushev @ Wikipedia
Nikolai Platonovich Patrushev (Russian: Николай Платонович Патрушев, tr. Nikolay Platonovich Patrushev; born 11 July 1951) is a Russian politician, security officer and intelligence officer. He served as Director of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), which is the main successor organization to the Soviet KGB (excluding foreign intelligence), from 1999 to 2008, and he has been Secretary of the Security Council of Russia since 2008.[1][2]

NTV (Russia) @ Wikipedia
On 24 March 2000, two days before the presidential elections, NTV featured the Ryazan apartment bombing of Fall 1999 in the talk show Independent Investigation. The talk with the residents of the Ryazan apartment building along with FSB public relations director Alexander Zdanovich and Ryazan branch head Alexander Sergeyev was filmed few days earlier. On 26 March, Boris Nemtsov voiced his concern over the possible shut-down of NTV for airing the talk.[8]

Seven months later, NTV general manager Igor Malashenko said at the JFK School of Government that Information Minister Mikhail Lesin warned him on several occasions. Malashenko's recollection of Lesin's warning was that by airing the talk show NTV "crossed the line" and that the NTV managers were "outlaws" in the eyes of the Kremlin.[9]

According to Alexander Goldfarb, Malashenko told him that Valentin Yumashev brought a warning from the Kremlin one day before airing the show promising in no uncertain terms that the NTV managers "should consider themselves finished" if they would go ahead with the broadcast.[10]

On 11 May 2000, tax police, backed by officers from the general prosecutor's office and the FSB, stormed the Moscow headquarters of NTV and Media-Most and searched the premises for 12 hours. Critics considered this move politically motivated, as NTV voiced opposition to Putin since his presidential electoral campaign. Putin denied any involvement.

...

In a surprisingly informal deal, the charges against Gusinsky were lifted after he signed an agreement with Mikhail Lesin, Minister of Media, on 20 July. Under the "shares for freedom" transaction or Protocol No.6 (Протокол N.6. Доля свободы) agreement, Gusinsky would discharge his debts by selling Media-Most to Gazprom-Media, which had held a 30% share of NTV since 1996, for the price imposed by the latter, and was given a guarantee that he would not be prosecuted. After leaving the country, Gusinsky claimed he was pressured to sign the agreement by the prospect of the criminal investigation. Media-Most refused to comply with the agreement.

On February 25 [2019], Igor Malashenko passed away in Spain. Malashenko, a major media figure, was the co-founder and general director of the television station NTV. (...) After 2001, Malashenko left Russia, and until 2009, he directed the channel RTVI. In the months leading up to Russia’s 2018 presidential election, he also became a campaign director for the celebrity journalist and controversial opposition candidate Ksenia Sobchak.

https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2019/02/...
“Everything shows” that Malashenko died by suicide, the state-run TASS news agency cited an unnamed Spanish law enforcement source as saying on Tuesday.
A preliminary autopsy report indicated that “hanging was the cause of death,” an unnamed court official was later quoted as saying.
“According to preliminary data, there are no signs of a crime,” the High Court of Justice official added.

Russian Poet Dmitry Bykov Targeted by Navalny Poisoners

Dmitry Bykov @ Wikipedia
Dmitry Lvovich Bykov (Russian: Дмитрий Львович Быков, IPA: [ˈdmʲitrʲɪj ˈlʲvovʲɪdʑ ˈbɨkəf] (About this soundlisten); born 20 December 1967) is a Russian writer, poet and journalist.[1] He is also known as biographer of Boris Pasternak, Bulat Okudzhava and Maxim Gorky.

...

Together with actor Mikhail Yefremov, he created project "Citizen Poet" (a pun on Nikolai Nekrasov's poem "Poet and Citizen"). Yefremov reads poems, written by Bykov, which are usually satirical comments on the contemporary Russian society, politics and culture. Each poems parodies the style of a famous poet of the past, e.g. Pushkin, Nekrasov, Kipling, among others. It was originally broadcast on Dozhd TV channel, but the project was closed because the poems were too critical towards Russian government.

...

In April 2019 Dmitry Bykov was poisoned, but survived.[4] It is suspected that a nerve poison was used.[5][6]

Zelo verjetno, podobnost je preveč očitna.

Dmitry Bykov then flew to Ekaterinburg the next day and on to Ufa the following morning. He fell severely ill during the flight to Ufa, began uncontrollable vomiting and ultimately lost consciousness just after the plane landed.
He remained in a coma for five days, suffering from what doctors initially diagnosed as cerebral edema and critical blood glucose levels. He was placed on artificial ventilation and treated symptomatically as well through broad-action antibiotics against an unknown source of “bacterial poisoning”.

I had missed the Russian ambassador's candid explanation of why his government tried to poison @Navalny with Novichok. He makes a pretty convincing case: Navalny tried to destabilize society through "elections".
But seriously.. one thing the Kremlin had going for them was the evil-slick diplomatic school: Machiavellian, casuistic, jesuit and fluent. Wtf happened to those? This one is a caricature. Apparently everything's gone downhill. (ask Kudryavtsev)
Plus, high time for journalism to change its rules. After being confronted with verbal runs like this, the interviewer should just say "Ambassador, you make absolutely no fucking sense", and not "Thanking for helping us make sense of the new situation".

Another Orwellian gem. A St. Petersburg policeman is being sued over allegedly passing flight passenger data regarding @navalny's and @pevchikh flights to a reporter investigating the poisoning.

In the meantime, the FSB are kidnapping people whom they suspect helped us with data for the @navalny poisoning investigation; torturing them to get "confessions" and then bringing them in for "official" questioning. And yes, FSB, we are investigating *this* as well.

Wow. It looks like Russia just banned the investigative news outlet @wwwproektmedia as an undesirable organization. They didn’t even bother with the “foreign agent” designation.
The Justice Ministry has also designated the publication’s eight journalists as “foreign agents.” This is Russia’s single most draconian crackdown on the independent media in decades.

https://meduza.io/en/news/2021/07/15/ru...
The Russian authorities have banned the investigative outlet Proekt as an “undesirable organization” and blacklisted its journalists as “foreign agents.”
Citing the state news agency TASS, Mediazona reported on July 15 that the Russian Attorney General’s Office had declared Proekt’s publisher, the American-registered company Project Media, Inc. “undesirable.”
In turn, the Russian Justice Ministry added Proekt editor-in-chief Roman Badanin to its “foreign agent media” registry, along with four other Proekt journalists.
In addition, the Justice Ministry blacklisted Open Media editor-in-chief Yulia Yarosh as a “foreign agent,” along with her deputy Maxim Glinkin, and Radio Svoboda correspondent Elizaveta Mayetnaya.
Organizations recognized as “undesirable” are banned from conducting any activity in Russia. Russian citizens who cooperate with “undesirable” groups can face criminal charges.

One of the biggest secrets of the Russian police is the welfare of Alexander Kolokoltsev, the son of the Minister of the Interior. His property is hidden in state databases, although the minister's son has never even worked in the civil service.
Perhaps the reason for this mystery was that numerous property was recorded on the relatives of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, obtained, among other things, thanks to the Kolokoltsevs' connections with influential businessmen and at least one Izmaylovo authority.

Now you can see on the map where and why more people are robbed, killed, stolen.

If you’re not a registered “foreign agent” media outlet in Russia, are you even doing journalism?

raziskovalni novinar pri Meduzi:
https://twitter.com/Alexey__Kovalev/sta...
Remember, all of this is ostensibly the Kremlin’s “mirror response” to @RT_com’s US affiliate having been added to the FARA registry back in 2017. Not much else has happened to them or their pseudo-“leftist” offshoots since then.
In fact, @RT_com plays a part in Russian indy media outlets being “foreign agented” by the government. It’s clear now that the Justice Ministry’s designation is always preceded by a byline-less “investigation” on RT’s Russian website. Their reporters” take pride in it.
(I flagged the email above to a RT editor and they agreed that this is extremely inappropriate behavior not condoned by the channel. Except, it turns out, it’s not only condoned but encouraged, seeing that this dude’s byline still appears on @RT_com, so no regrets about sharing)

Bellingcat:
https://twitter.com/bellingcat/status/1...
The Russian government has added @the_ins_ru to the registry of "foreign agents". This marks yet another instance of Russia cracking down on all independent media, especially those who have investigated the government's corruption and wrongdoing.
We have worked with @the_ins_ru on numerous high-profiles stories since 2017 -- our first collaboration was a two-part investigation between them and @christogrozev into the GRU-organized (failed) coup in Montenegro:
https://www.bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-...
Since then, @the_ins_ru has worked to crack some of the biggest stories in independent investigative journalism across the world, mostly focused on the activities of Russia's security agencies. These stories have been done both with us and on their own.
Wired wrote a profile of @the_ins_ru and its founder @Dobrokhotov a couple years ago, highlighting the work they've done since its founding in 2013:
https://www.wired.com/story/roman-dobro...
It'd take a 30-tweet thread to detail every investigation they've broken, but the two biggest were identifying Sergei Skripal's poisoners (in the GRU) and Navalny's poisoners (in the FSB). They shared a European Press Prize with us for the Skripal research.
https://www.europeanpressprize.com/arti...
As Roman has told @meduzaproject, @the_ins_ru is a Latvian organization -- registered there, housed there, and with their finances there. They will continue on with their work. Unfortunately, it now seems that independent Russian journalism must be done offshore.
You can support @the_ins_ru with a credit card, Paypal, or cryptocurrency here: https://donate.theins.ru

The Insider has partnered with Bellingcat on work exposing the Kremlin's assassinations at home and abroad, and this designation certainly isn't going to stop our continued reporting on the Kremlin's murders.

A Russian court in the southwestern city of Rostov-on-Don has handed lengthy prison terms to a second group of individuals from the North Caucasus region of North Ossetia for taking part in a massive rally in April 2020 to protest against coronavirus restrictions.
The Lenin district court on July 29 found Artur Dzhavadyan guilty of attacking a police officer and sentenced him to 6 1/2 years in prison.
Four other defendants, Arsen Brikhov, Khetag Samov, Georgy Khugayev, and Atsamaz Tebloyev, were convicted of taking part in mass disorder and sentenced to prison terms of between four years, nine months, and 5 1/2 years in prison.
Two days earlier, five other men who took part in the massive rally against coronavirus restrictions in North Ossetia were handed prison sentences of between five years and 5 1/2 years.
...
The protest was initiated online via social networks by North Ossetian opera singer Vadim Cheldiyev, who permanently resides in St. Petersburg.
Cheldiyev was detained in St. Petersburg after the rally in Vladikavkaz and brought to North Ossetia, where he was charged with spreading fake news about the coronavirus and assaulting police, which he vehemently denies.

Moscow has finally ended its dumbest pandemic restriction – a barely observed requirement to wear gloves everywhere in public. Some epidemiologists worry unscientific ideas like this convinced Russians that wearing masks was equally pointless.
The worrying thing is Sobyanin can’t admit this was a ridiculous idea that had no basis in science – he claims the reason they’re lifting it is because they’re doing such a good job fighting the pandemic. Other bizarre ideas include a short-lived ban on sitting on park benches.

Alexei Chesnakov, a political technologist often associated with Vladislav Surkov gives his rundown on how the Kremlin destroyed Navalny movement. He lists six major narratives against Navalny and his movement

1. Foreign influence
Navalny and his team work in the interests of foreign powers, including foreign intelligences; are linked to "toxic" personalities like @Billbrowder and @McFaul (as defined by the Kremlin); call for sanctions against Russia; are foreign funded

2. Ethics
Have no right to call for protests while remaining outside of the country ("they are cynical"); use donations for personal enrichment;

3. Extremism
Call on children to participate in political protests; recognized by the court as extremists;

4. Internal split
Navalny activists are expendable for movement leadership (vertical split); those activists that remain in Russia are forced to cooperate while the emigres get radicalized with the help of security provided by the West (horizontal split); internal document leaks

5. Toxicity
The price of supporting Navalny in Russia rises by the hour

6. Personal factors
Protests leaders traits are being used to build antipathy towards the movement as a whole

Chesnakov concluded that Kremlin was effective with administration of this campaign and won - the movement is destroyed, Kremlin is victories. Says Navalny and his team should have known better that they can't handle the risk.
So. Chesnakov is right in listing the narratives that have been used against Navalny and his team and that those narrative are Kremlin created/promoted.
Those narratives are build on lies and manipulations.
It is how Kremlin plays.

https://twitter.com/leonidragozin/statu...
The main issue with Navalny’s Smart Voting is that it is too smart for many. The idea of voting for the communists or for the gangster-ish and far right LDPR is hard sell for its generally liberal and pro-Western constituency. But that’s if you think it is a normal election.>>>
Smart Voting is designed as an act of civic disobedience, a voter flashmob if you like. What it allows is to show that “non-systemic” opposition has a formidable constituency that can impact even the most farcical and illegitimate election.
No matter whether it achieves anything at the polls (the Kremlin has installed multiple shields, including e-voting - a straightforward rigging tool), Smart Voting is already a success given the amount of effort spent on derailing it. The election is profoundly de-legitimized.
As a few commentators have pointed out, this might be the last election in which voters have any say at all. This is why it is probably not the best time that to lament that the best of your available choices is not exactly Václav Havel.
The main issue with the opponents of Smart Voting is that they appear to have nothing smart, or not so smart but efficient, to offer as viable alternative. Navalny decries them as moaning idlers.

An outbreak of Covid-19 inside the Kremlin has sickened dozens of people working close to Vladimir Putin, the Russian president said Thursday, highlighting the scale of the outbreak in one of the country’s most carefully guarded areas.
“It’s not one or two people but tens of people,” Putin told a televised video link with other leaders in the Collective Security Treaty Organization. “I will have to observe self-isolation for several days.”
Putin, 68, said Tuesday he’d been in close contact with an aide for a full day who was later diagnosed with Covid-19, and thus was going into self-isolation. The Kremlin hasn’t identified the staffer.

Earlier that day, the Mash Telegram channel cited unnamed sources as saying that Kiselyov was hospitalized with a moderately severe case of coronavirus with roughly 25-50% lung damage. Mash reported that Kiselyov's symptoms developed as a dry cough, fever and shortness of breath, but that he continued to work until his PCR test came back positive.
In January, Kiselyov told media that he had been vaccinated against Covid-19 with Russia's Sputnik V vaccine.

Real scandal over electronic voting figures in Moscow this morning. Still no official results — just a leaked 4am social media post that suggests Kremlin candidates will get above-average shares at the expense of their opponents. Other regions filed returns almost immediately.
Two competing factors are at play here: desire not to create protest sentiment in the capital; several sensitive seats where the Kremlin's candidate appears to be in difficulty.

https://twitter.com/Andrew__Roth/status...
Why is it taking so long to release information about Moscow's 2 million online votes? One idea is because it appears so lopsided and contradictory to results at polling stations that it's better to drip-drip then risk dropping all of these unauditable votes at once.
For example: A big upset is brewing in a protest district in western Moscow. KPRF candidate Lobanov looks set to defeat state TV journalist Popov 42-31. But Popov claims that online voting is breaking for him 46.5-26.5. He'll likely win this one.
Online voting will deliver an average of 133 thousand votes to each of Moscow's 15 districts. That's about the number of votes cast at polling stations. And there are no polling monitors, no paper trail, just promises about the "blockchain" confirming its accuracy.
The head of Echo of Moscow says that the government has had the results of online voting since 4am. And results have been released for all the other regions in Russia that had online voting. Why not Moscow (because they'll show UR polling way too high)
Another example in my 198th district. Independent @bananstena is edging out the Kremlin's preferred candidate at polling stations. But they expect to get thwacked online. Why would online voting swing so heavily against a youth candidate? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

https://twitter.com/maxseddon/status/14...
Some Moscow candidates who were set to win the paper vote, but are now losing thanks to huge swings in the online vote, are calling for people to meet downtown to "discuss the results."

https://twitter.com/leonidragozin/statu...
A senior Communist Party figure, Valery Rashkin, calls for a protest in the centre of Moscow tonight. Rashkin is one of Navalny-backed Duma candidates whose victory was stolen by e-voting fraud.

https://twitter.com/olliecarroll/status...
A major development with Communists refusing to accept results from e-voting in Moscow, which predictably turned a number of constituencies that looked to be leaning away fm Kremlin candidates. This is kind of unchartered territory, but my guess is things will end with a whimper.
