Under the direction of Ted Peterson and Julian LeFay — veteran game developers —Once Lost Games is creating a new open-world fantasy RPG.

This new setting, The Wayward Realms, aims to revivify the RPG genre by applying modern development standards and quality-of-life advancements to the design philosophy of classic role-playing games.

An open world RPG in an ever-changing setting
The Wayward Realms is set on a group of over one hundred islands, ranging from small to massive, known collectively as the Archipelago, where scores of factions vie for influence and power. Dynasties strive to maintain the status quo, upstarts seek to earn their place at the top, and intriguing power-houses set generational plots into motion. Should the player earn a position beside a distinguished seat, he or she may change the course of history. However, they must first prove their worth. Players will venture through strange lands, encountering humans, elves, dwarves, and other races of a more unusual nature, all of whom live within the Archipelago and its kingdoms.

Upam da Areno in Daggerfall nista pomagala programirat, ker sta obe igri bli taki bugy mess, da se še Cyberpunk lahko skrije. Daggerfall je bil še po 10 patchih komaj igrabilen.

A World Full of Lore. We call it Wayward Realms for a reason. On the surface, things may have that familiar, medieval fantasy look, but dig a bit deeper and there's a lot to learn. From the multiple moons in the sky, to the libraries worth of books, to the multiple cultures of each race, there is always something new to discover.

To je res vznemirljiva novica! The Wayward Realms se sliši kot obetavna igra, ki obuja klasične RPG elemente v sodobnem okolju. Z odprtim svetom, polnim različnih frakcij in edinstvenih ras, bo zagotovo ponudila globoko in zanimivo izkušnjo. Komaj čakam, da vidim, kako se bo ta projekt razvijal!

Kampanija na Kickstarterju je bila uspešna.

Uraden razvoj igre se je začel leta 2019.

Decembra 2025 je studio sporočil, da zapuščajo Unreal 5 pogon in, da bodo naredili lasten hišni boljši pogon.

Osnovni sistemi pogona Realms Engine so že narejeni in delujoči, vendar pogon kot celota še ni popolnoma dokončan.

Razvoj igre se bo malo zavlekel ampak veliko stvari bodo lahko prenesli iz Unreal 5 pogona na njihov nov Realms Engine. Programska koda (Skripte): To je največji zalogaj. Vsa koda, ki je skrbela za igranje (gameplay mechanics), fiziko, premikanje likov in sisteme bojevanja v UE5, je morala biti na novo napisana za Realms Engine.
Uporabniški vmesnik (UI): Meniji, inventar in celoten vizualni vmesnik, ki ga igralec vidi na zaslonu, so tesno povezani s pogonom, zato jih morajo zgraditi na novo.
Osvetlitev in materiali: Ker ima Realms Engine (ki temelji na Wicked Engine) drugačen grafični upodabljalnik kot Unrealov Lumen, morajo razvijalci ročno prilagoditi, kako luči, sence in materiali (npr. kovina, les) izgledajo v novem okolju.


Za zamenjavo pogona so se odločili, ker komercialni pogoni, kot je UE5, so odlični za določene vrste iger, vendar niso optimizirani za masivne, dinamične "peskovnike" (sandbox). Razvijalci so ugotovili, da jim UE5 ne ponuja dovolj nadzora in prilagodljivosti za upravljanje tako obsežnega sveta.

Slaba optimizacija delovanja: Ekipa je želela rešiti težave s slabim delovanjem, ki pogosto pestijo sodobne igre na pogonu UE5. Z novim pogonom igra dosega stabilnih 30+ FPS na 10 let starih prenosnikih brez namenske grafične kartice, skoraj 30 FPS na konzoli Nintendo Switch in ciljnih 60 FPS na PS5 ter Xbox Series X.

Predolgo nalaganje podatkov: Podatkovna struktura UE5 ni bila kos hitremu procesiranju ogromnih površin. Novi pogon omogoča, da se celotna statična regijska mapa Eyjar (ki je štirikrat večja od Manhattana) naloži v manj kot eni sekundi.

Zahtevna simulacija sistemov: Igra zahteva hkratno računanje obnašanja in sledenje tisočem ali milijonom aktivnih NPC-jev v realnem času, skupaj z dinamičnimi kvesti in odzivnim okoljem. Lastni pogon omogoča neposredno optimizacijo kode natanko za te specifične simulacije.




Igra The Wayward Realms bo imela enega največjih svetov v zgodovini videoiger, saj bo njena celotna površina obsegala približno 500.000 kvadratnih kilometrov kopenskih površin. 5400-krat večja od Skyrim-a: Kopenska površina bo več tisočkrat presegla velikost igre The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. :|
