It wasn't the one woman calling ICE. It was that ICE went roaring in, humiliating and shackling the workers. Then, Trump wanted them to train Americans before they were deported.
The Korean tradition stresses business relationships and respect. I've heard it described as "High Context Culture." Hyundai did not have their paperwork in order. Applications for work permits should have been included in the initial negotiations or at least submitted on time. A civilized response would be to send in a team to audit levy fines for any breaches. The executive responsible would be humiliated, and his replacement would be more cautious in the future. Trump's response also solved the problem; Hyundai will not repeat their error, but it is because they will invest elsewhere. Some people will leave if disrespected, and that applies to countries and companies as well. We will feel the repercussions for decades after Trump is gone. This deal was negotiated, and the ground was broken during the Biden administration. The relationship was broken by Trump. A new administration might make amends, but the trust will not be there.
Somehow, I never imagined that the art of the deal would mean using a sledgehammer to swat a fly.
