Počasen disk v linuxu

se oproščam, da je problem v angleščini, ker sem poslal tut na usenet, sam se mi ne da še v slovenščini napisat, pa sj itak vsi razumete angleško!
hi!
i have this weird problem with my disk read speed.
my configuration:
RH 8.0
MSI Turbo2 v5.0 (KT133A chipset)
AMD Duron 600
256Mb SDRAM 133
2xMaxtor 40Gb 5400 ATA100 (disks are NOT identical)
Fujitsu 8.4 5400 ATA33
1st HDD is connected to primary ide channel as master (no slave connected). it has one ext3 partition for rh8 and one for windows. 2nd HDD is connected to secondary channel on Promise Ultra66 controler (again as master without slave). it has one vfat partition and two swap partitions (1 for win and 1 for linux) at the end. 3rd HDD has only one vfat partition.
my problem is that when i'm copying large files (probably the same goes for small files but i don't notice it) i get like 1-2Mb/s transfers. this is only the case when i copy files from /dev/hda1 to /dev/hdx. when i copy files from /dev/hdx to /dev/hda the speeds are at least 5x greater. copy from /dev/hda1 to /dev/hda1 is extremly slow also. so, i guess there is only problem with my /dev/hda read speed, right?
i thought hdparm would show low scores for /dev/hda but this is what i got:
[root@localhost root]# hdparm -Tti /dev/hda

the speeds are about right for this configuration, aren't they?
i have dma enabled, tried (un)masking irq, -c1, etc... nothig helped the actual read speed.
here is also hdparm -I:
