"Venezuela's heavy/sour crude is uniquely suited to US Gulf Coast refineries (historically ~10% of US imports pre-sanctions), making it a strategic asset for energy security."
"Venezuelan oil is particularly good for making kerosene (and jet fuel) -- not because it's "high quality" overall, but because its heavy, aromatic-rich composition yields high volumes of middle distillates (the kerosene/diesel boiling range) with excellent natural properties for aviation fuel when processed in the right refineries."
"Fun Fact: Before sanctions, Citgo's Lemont refinery produced ~30,000 barrels/day of Jet A -- almost entirely from Venezuelan crude. That's enough to fuel ~300 Boeing 737 flights per day."

71% of Americans back Trump's attacks on drug cartel boats: Harvard/Harris poll
A new Harvard CAPS/Harris poll found that 71 percent of American voters back the deployment of US military forces to target and eliminate drug traffickers in Latin America, including sinking cartel vessels en route to US shores.
71 percent of voters overall backed the use of military forces to target drug traffickers, along with 56 percent of Democrats, 89 percent of Republicans, and 67 percent of independents. The survey, conducted online between October 1 and 2, included 2,413 registered US voters and has a margin of error of 1.99 percent.
President Trump has made taking on the cartels a key focus of his administration. Shortly after reentering the White House in January, the president designated certain cartel groups as foreign terrorist organizations, paving the way for military and law enforcement actions aimed at restoring safety across America's borders and communities.
This designation allows the US government to deploy counter-terrorism resources, including financial sanctions and direct strikes against cartel operations. Trump emphasized that the move is essential to combating the fentanyl crisis that has claimed hundreds of thousands of American lives, vowing to dismantle the "criminal empires" that flood the nation with deadly narcotics.
During a Wednesday meeting with Cabinet members at the White House, Trump detailed his vision to eliminate cartels, describing the terrorist drug trafficking groups as the "ISIS of the Western Hemisphere." He vowed to kill them.
"These groups have unleashed more bloodshed and killing on American soil than all other terrorist groups combined. These are the worst of the worst. It should now be clear to the entire world that the cartels are the ISIS of the Western Hemisphere, in addition to their monstrous violence, such as cutting off heads, burning their enemies alive, and burning innocent people alive too," Trump said during a Homeland Security Task Force roundtable.
He later announced that the objective of the administration would be to "eliminate" the threat of the terror groups.
"We're finally treating the cartels as the core national security threat that they really are. The cartels are waging war on America, and just as I promised in the campaign, we're waging war on them like they've never seen before," Trump added.
The roundtable comes shortly after President Trump released unclassified footage of a US military operation involving a cartel drug boat being blown up in Latin American waters.

### Historical Context
US hostilities toward Venezuela intensified in the mid-2010s under the Obama administration, primarily in response to the Venezuelan government's crackdown on protests in 2014 and 2017, which the US described as violations of human rights and democratic norms. These early sanctions targeted individuals and entities involved in repression, corruption, and undermining democracy, such as officials in the Maduro regime. By 2017, under Trump, sanctions expanded to block Venezuela's access to US financial systems and secondary sanctions on foreign entities dealing with the regime's oil sector, aiming to "deny the regime money" and force political change. The Biden administration briefly eased some oil sanctions in 2022-2023 to encourage electoral reforms but reimposed them in 2024 over disputed elections, citing failures to uphold democratic principles.
From the Venezuelan government's perspective, these measures are not about democracy but economic warfare to topple a sovereign government that resists US dominance. President Nicolás Maduro has repeatedly called US actions "imperial aggression" designed to fabricate conflicts and control resources, warning of a "new war in Latin America." Officials argue sanctions have exacerbated poverty and migration, not addressed any internal failures.
### Economic Motivations: Oil and Resources
A core driver is Venezuela's vast oil reserves--the world's largest at 303.8 billion barrels--making it a strategic prize for US energy interests. The US has long sought favorable access, with sanctions forcing Western firms out and benefiting adversaries like Russia and China, who stepped in to extract oil on terms advantageous to them. Critics, including Venezuelan voices, contend the hostilities stem from Chávez and Maduro's nationalization of oil assets in the 2000s, which reduced US corporate influence (e.g., ExxonMobil's losses in arbitration). US officials frame sanctions as anti-corruption tools, but analysts note they "help US adversaries" by isolating Venezuela from Western markets while punishing ordinary citizens through hyperinflation and shortages.
### Geopolitical and Security Concerns
Beyond economics, the US views Venezuela as a hub for adversaries: alliances with Russia, China, Iran, and Cuba allow military basing, arms deals, and dollar-bypassing trade, threatening US hegemony in its "backyard." Drug trafficking and migration add urgency; Venezuela is accused of harboring cartels fueling US fentanyl crises and border chaos. Maduro's government dismisses this as pretexts for invasion, citing UN appeals against "US aggression plans."
### Recent Escalations (2025)
Under Trump's second term, hostilities have militarized: US strikes on "drug boats" off Venezuela's coast--framed as responses to cartel "hostilities"--risk broader conflict, with deployments like the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier group signaling potential regime change. Figures like Marco Rubio push for ousting Maduro to install opposition leaders like María Corina Machado, who favor US-friendly oil policies. Venezuela warns of "extrajudicial" escalation, requesting UN intervention. Public sentiment on X echoes this divide: some see US actions as justified anti-cartel strategy, others as resource grabs masked as democracy promotion.
In summary, while US rhetoric emphasizes human rights and security, the substantiated drivers--oil control, countering rival powers, and regime change--reveal a pattern of interventionism rooted in economic and strategic dominance, as critiqued by Venezuelan leaders and independent analysts. This has prolonged Venezuela's crisis, with sanctions alone estimated to have halved GDP since 2013.

Zanič v primerjavi s čim? Režimi naših prijateljev, kot so Izrael, Savdska Arabija, Irak, ...?
Rusi in venezuelci so dejansko precej demokratični v primerjavi z savdijci in židi.
