An American actor who’s appeared in movies starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Cruise has landed an unwitting role in a real-life thriller about the grinding struggle against graft in Europe’s most corrupt country.
Michael-John Wolfe, who makes personalized newscasts for birthdays and other events as a side gig, said he had no idea that a video he was paid to shoot suggesting Ukraine’s leading anti-corruption campaigner embezzled U.S. funds would be posted on YouTube and cited by opponents in Kiev as the real deal.
“I thought it was a prank,” Wolfe said by email, adding that he only knows the screen name of the person who hired him on Fiverr, an online marketplace where he charges $50 to orate 150 words. “I’ve been doing these newscasts since 2011 and never had a problem before. I apologize if anyone was hurt.”
With just 16,000 views, Wolfe’s video is the least of Vitaliy Shabunin’s worries. The founder of the U.S.-funded Anti-Corruption Action Center, whose work is critical to unlocking billions of dollars of aid for Ukraine’s cash-strapped government, has become a lightening rod for entrenched interests in a nation where runaway corruption sparked two revolutions in the space of a decade.
Shabunin, 32, has been under relentless pressure since March, months after an initiative he championed -- mandatory asset disclosures by officials -- came into force, angering everyone from prosecutors and politicians to tax authorities and even the security services.
The revelations of million-dollar bank accounts, mansions and luxury goods sparked outcry from a public that already considered rampant graft more menacing than Russia.
...
Shabunin, a former councilman from the western city of Rivne who’s at turns jovial and resolute, spoke in an interview in Kiev after another video surfaced that’s far more damaging than Wolfe’s fake newscast. It shows him finally losing his temper and punching a self-proclaimed independent journalist who’d been stalking him with a camera and trolling him online for months.
The June clip of the activist dropping the agitator, Vsevolod Filimonov, with a quick right cross while wearing a backpack and clutching a sports jacket has been viewed 90,000 times. It’s now evidence in an assault probe that carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison.
“I hit a person who was haunting my team,” Shabunin told reporters after his Aug. 16 hearing. “I am prepared to bear responsibility for that.”
...
Before the uprising, Filimonov was fired from an election-monitoring watchdog in his native Luhansk, one of two regions now partly held by rebels, after he was recorded soliciting a $3,000 bribe from a local official.
...
Filimonov is an aide to Serhiy Melnychuk, a lawmaker who was stripped of his immunity for alleged ties to organized crime, which he denies.
...
Semenchenko says the pair do the bidding of the military’s top prosecutor, Anatoliy Matios, who was reprimanded for exceeding his authority by trying to draft Shabunin into the army.
...
Matios, who was also unreachable by phone and via Facebook, slammed Shabunin on the social network in July, calling him a “journalist-beating conscription-dodger.”
Shabunin was on his way to a military recruitment center when the altercation with Filimonov occurred. He was there to contest a draft order Matios’s office issued challenging a medical deferment that exempts him from army service
...
Three conscription officers and a camera crew showed up at Shabunin’s house to deliver the summons on his daughter’s birthday in June, a week after his center filed a lawsuit challenging Matios’s decision to ban outsiders from viewing his and his staff’s asset declarations. Matios’s 2016 filing showed he owned multiple homes and had $600,000 in cash.
...
The black ops against Shabunin began to intensify after the EU visa deal. The Anti-Corruption Action Center accuses the State Security Service, or SBU, of tapping its employees’ phones and sharing their movements with people who’re either paid or coerced to harass them. It also says an SBU officer organized a protest outside his house on a Sunday morning in late April with placards making the same claims as Wolfe’s anonymous scriptwriter.
...
The U.S. Embassy in Kiev has come to Shabunin’s defense, saying via Twitter that the Anti-Corruption Action Center has accounted for every dollar of aid and that it’s “proud” to be the watchdog’s partner.

Andrey finds links between the Petesrburg troll factory, the fake Azov Battalion video from a couple years ago (where they burned a Dutch flag) and new videos of a terrorist group taking credit for the Rostov fires
The fake Azov videos were published about two years ago. Andrey is absolutely relentless in his research -- kept following leads for two years, and found new connections with unbelievably detailed digital research.
Well, not ran *entirely* out of Donetsk, but some videos were staged there. Close cooperation between the DNR and Prigozhin's Petersburg troll factory. Another finding that shouldn't be overlooked from @Soshnikoff's research is clear proof of close cooepration between KiberBerkut ("Ukrainian" hacker group) and DNR. Proof found via blacksmith larper:

The National Security Council decided during a meeting on Tuesday to greenlight the presentation of a $47 million grant package to the Ukrainian government to purchase American defense arms, including the powerful Javelin anti-tank missiles.
The president and Congress must approve the sale of anti-tank missiles.
...
Russia invaded Crimea and sent troops and arms into eastern Ukraine shortly after his ouster, leading to a conflict that rages on to this day. The Obama administration never provided arms assistance to Ukraine in response.
A former Trump White House official and adviser to the president expressed concern to ABC News that arming Ukraine would inflame tensions in the region and aggravate America’s fragile relationship with Russia.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary Gen. James Mattis have been in discussions since June about how to best make the sale. They strongly recommended the decision to finance and sell anti-tank missiles to Ukraine above two other options that would aid in the arming of Ukraine.

The exact reason for the sudden “invasion” of little green men in Luhansk is not clear, but the event is likely related to a power struggle between Plotnitsky and Kornet after the former fired the police chief. This conflict is not just between the two strongmen of Luhansk, but also serves as a proxy war between Russian and Donetsk authorities. The Ukrainian news outlet Depo.ua called the Luhansk conflict “Surkov versus the FSB,” putting the support of the Russian security services (FSB) with the ousted police chief Kornet, and the support of the Kremlin’s point person in the Donbas, Vladislav Surkov, with Plotnitsky.

1. UA police say Plotnitsky fled Luhansk to Russia - unconfirmed.
2. A huge military column arrived, can they be future Putin's "peacekeepers"?
3. Could the Russians stage the coup to deploy forces to assault e.g. Stanytsia_Luhanska later? (OSCE wants UA troops to be withdrawn fr/there)
4. Or Putin just wants to eliminate so-called LNR and put occupied Luhansk under "DNR" control?
5. This "coup" may also be a trick to undermine the prisoner exchange ("Russia tried to ask them but look what's happening there, we cannot do anything" etc)
6. If Kornet just wants to stay in power, Plotnitsky is still needed for the "LNR" project because he was "elected" + he signed the "2nd Minsk deal" (signatures of him & Zakharchenko go separated after representatives of the Trilateral Contact Group - OSCE, UA, RU)
7. Removing Plotnitsky may mean undermining the Minsk peace process.
8. Kornet wants to bring back to power chieftains who were rivals of Plotnitsky in 2014-2015 (Mozgovoy etc are dead, he probably implies RU 'cossack' warlord Kozitsyn etc)
9. Everyone in Luhansk understands that Kornet's statement on a large Ukrainian subversive group captured a night before is just a dumb causa formalis to explain why the center of Luhansk was blocked, but he may be asked to show the saboteurs. Who will be they?
10. If it is really a conflict between Putin's aide for occupied territories Surkov (Plotnitsky) and FSB (Kornet), then FSB is winning for now, will Surkov be fired from his post later or he'll just lose control over Luhansk (still controlling Donetsk, Abkhazia, South Ossetia)?
11. Tomorrow we can witness some of Plotnitsky's "ministers" fleeing to Russia along Luhansk-Sorokyne highway to the uncontrolled Izvaryne border CP. If the troops deployed this evening and the night before really came to help Kornet as local pro-Russians believe
12. One more point. It seemed first that the Russian media took Kornet's side, quoting only his video address about him still being a minister, UA saboteurs etc. But later as the statement by Plotnitsky (Kornet is dismissed, we'll restore order) was published, RU quoted it too.
13. If Plotnitsky would be dismissed, then Zakharchenko may be the next to resign - his key rival is Denis Pushilin (also backed by Surkov), another potential is warlord Khodakovsky (from "Akhmetov group"). Infographic on the Donetsk groups of influence by @EuromaidanPress: 14. If all forces coming to Luhansk were 'pro-Kornet' then why did they bring so many troops and equipment? Does it mean that some of the options #2-5 are relevant?

Does it mean that some of the options #2-5 are relevant?

Chicken Kiev speech @ Wikipedia
The Chicken Kiev speech is the nickname for a speech given by the United States president George H. W. Bush in Kiev, Ukraine, on August 1, 1991, months before a December referendum in which Ukrainians voted to withdraw from the Soviet Union, in which Bush cautioned against "suicidal nationalism". The speech was written by Condoleezza Rice—later Secretary of State under President George W. Bush—when she was in charge of Soviet and Eastern European affairs for the first President Bush. It outraged Ukrainian nationalists and American conservatives, with the conservative New York Times columnist William Safire calling it the "Chicken Kiev speech" in protest at what he saw as its "colossal misjudgment".

The European Commission has decided not to transfer the third and last 600 million euro tranche of the current 1.8 euro macro-financial assistance program to Ukraine, approved in 2015.
The European Union's decision was made because the Ukrainian government has failed to fulfill the four last conditions the European donors set for the disbursal of the low-interest loan. The authorities failed to cancel the timber trade moratorium, launch an automatic system for checking electronic asset declarations, and a system for checking the beneficial owners of companies, and adopt the law on the credit register of the National Bank of Ukraine.

Russia denies accusations from Ukraine and NATO it supports the rebels with troops and weapons, but the U.S. envoy to peace talks, Kurt Volker, said Moscow was answerable for the violence.
“Russia withdrew its officers from JCCC - a ceasefire implementation tool - right before a massive escalation in ceasefire violations. Ukraine just suffered some of the worst fighting since February, 2017. Decision for peace lies with Russia,” Volker tweeted on Tuesday.

This shelling incident was one of the most destructive of 2017 in the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine.
Houses caught fire in the night as some forty indiscriminate incendiary artillery shells “rained” onto the town from non-government-controlled Horlivka, Donetsk Oblast, reportedly still burning into the morning.

The Telegram channel “WarGonzo” shared drone footage on December 20 of Russian-led separatist artillery fire targeting a position held by Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF). https://ok.ru/video/6204687821
Krysin had admitted to his part in the events, denying only that he killed the journalist. The court established that on February 17, 2014, Krysin agreed to payment of 20 thousand USD for collecting a gang of titushki to attack Euromaidan activists.
At around 21.00 on 18 February, they used a grenade to stop the taxi in which Veremiy was a passenger, dragged him out of the car and beat him with baseball bats. It is believed that it was one of the other titushki, Dzhalal Aliev (also known as Dima Dagestanets, and now in hiding) who fired the fatal shot when Veremiy tried to flee. The 31-year-old Vesti journalist who was married with a small son died shortly afterwards in hospital.
...
In a recent interview, prosecutor Oleksiy Donsky said that he believed the lengthy trial period should be attributed to judge Linnyk, and that it was doubtless in the interests of the accused. Donsky is careful in giving an opinion as to why the judge might drag out the case, but notes that this is common in many cases involving criminal charges against Krysin.

Inside a Russian disinformation campaign in Ukraine in 2014
By the morning of Feb. 22, 2014, it was clear that the government of Viktor Yanukovych, the beleaguered pro-Russian president of Ukraine, had fallen, amid protests sparked by his decision not to move toward a closer relationship with the European Union.
Yanukovych’s Russian allies denounced his political collapse as a “coup,” and the crisis became a flash point in relations between the Kremlin and the West.
Into the tumult leapt Russia’s military spy agency, the GRU, which launched a covert influence operation — one that presaged what Moscow would do in the United States two years later.
...
Its goal was to influence key decision-makers and the wider public to pave the way for the Russian military action that was launched Feb. 27 with the seizure of the Crimean parliament building by armed men, according to a classified GRU report obtained by The Washington Post.
...
Starting the day after Yanukovych’s fall, the military spies created a slew of fake personas on the social media platforms of Facebook and its Russian equivalent VKontakte, or VK for short. The personas were meant to represent ordinary people from across Ukraine who were disillusioned with opposition protests at Kiev’s central square, called the Maidan.
On Saturday evening, Feb. 22, 2014, a man calling himself Ivan Galitsin posted a comment on an article in a British newspaper. The story was about the Ukraine opposition leader and former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, who had been released from prison that day. “There was a coup in Ukraine,” wrote Galitsin in English. “I live in Kiev. I was on the Maidan, but peaceful protest ended two months ago, when we were displaced by armed nationalists. It’s a nightmare. Fascists came to us again 70 years after the Second World War. I do not want this future for Ukraine.”
Galitsin was the creation of a GRU psychological operations officer, according to the documents. The profile was created on Feb. 22, and he used as his profile photo a picture of Konstantin Yaroshenko, a convicted Russian drug smuggler serving time in a U.S. prison.
...
Pretending to be ordinary Ukrainians, GRU operatives also tapped out comments aimed at riling up pro-Russian citizens against the protesters, whom they called “zapadentsy” — or “westerners.” One comment read: “Brigades of zapadentsy are now on their way to rob and kill us. It is very clear that these people hold nothing sacred.’’
Another read: “The rise of the opposition here will be catastrophic. These people are completely different. They have a totally different vision of Ukraine’s future.”
Demonstrators on the Maidan were called “Nazis” and “fascists.”
The military spies posted physical threats on social media against Yanukovych allies in southeastern Ukraine to bolster Moscow’s claim that radical Ukrainians were inciting violence against Russians in the region. In one case, a fake persona named Vova Kravets issued threats on Facebook against 14 politicians.
...
On Feb. 27, when the Crimean parliament building was seized, the GRU created four groups on Facebook and VK to encourage Crimeans to support secession from Ukraine. “Using our accounts on Facebook, we circulated commentaries informing the population of the Crimean peninsula of a threat from Nazi organizations,” the GRU reported.
...
The GRU also used paid ads on Facebook to increase the groups’ popularity, according to the report. Together, the groups received nearly 200,000 views on Facebook on Feb. 27 alone, the report said. The content was republished on other groups on Facebook, on VK and on LiveJournal, another Russian social networking site.

Še pomnimo prijatelji?
Tole je intervju s prostovoljcem iz Armenije, ki je maja 2014 sodeloval pri okupaciji letališča v Donetsku.
https://www.theatlantic.com/internation...
When did you cross the border?
It was around dawn on May 24. On the Ukrainian side, we were met by some high-level representatives of the [self-proclaimed] Donetsk People's Republic. They had taken over some military base in Donetsk and they put us up in a barracks there. We slept the whole day. Then we washed up, got ourselves in order.
The next day, May 25, we took part in the well-known parade in the city in our KamAZ trucks—the one that the Chechens made famous. They gave interviews, fired their weapons into the air, posed for the cameras. People were cheering and they greeted the volunteers from Russia like liberators. In the evening, we returned to our barracks.
And when did you first see combat?
They sounded the alarm on the night of May 25-26. There were three guys in my group—from Moscow, Lipetsk, and Chukotka [in Russia]. They were all killed. We were put in civilian buses and taken to the airport. All 100 of us went into the building and there we joined up with some Ossetians. The passengers were quickly evacuated, but employees remained at their posts. In the morning, two planes landed and we didn't interfere with the work of the airport. The building was quickly taken under control.
What was the point of seizing a civilian airport in Donetsk? The fighting at that time was in a completely different place, near Slovyansk.
To prevent them from sending in troops from Kiev. They told us no one would fire at us. Just pose for the cameras and that's all. They would see us, get scared, give up. We'd disarm everyone and send them home. The airport would be ours.
Who do you mean?
The Ukrainian troops around the airport. There was gossip that supposedly we were so tough and everyone was afraid of us. But it turned out just the opposite. At 2 p.m. the helicopters came. Then the airplanes, and they started bombing the place. I was on the roof and with my aide, I managed to get to the sixth floor. It was a big attack—I counted four helicopters and two planes.
What happened on your floor?
One Chechen was killed on the roof immediately. Two others were wounded. They fired on the helicopters with everything they had. It took me two or three seconds to get up there. I fired on the high area from where a sniper was shooting at us. They forced us tightly into the building and were bombing from all sides. They had missile launchers around the perimeter of the airport and were firing on the terminal.
Do you think it was betrayal or incompetence?
I don't know. We lost a lot of men. One of the Chechens—a really smart guy—threw a couple of smoke bombs onto the roof and managed to drag his wounded comrades out. (...) Someone contacted the commander—a guy called Spark—and we were given the order to get into the trucks. It was nearly evening. The trucks were standing inside—in the terminal. I didn't want to get in. I knew how risky it was. Spark told me, "If you question the order, I'll shoot you here." I took my weapon and got in.
There were dead and wounded there?
//med umikom se jim je zgodil prijateljski ogenj
We rushed past at high speed. I didn't manage to look. Someone was still shooting. After about 500 meters, someone fired on our truck with a grenade launcher. The shell landed in the driver's cabin. (...) The truck that they hit first got caught in a crossfire from machine guns. There were also snipers firing at them. At least 30 men died there—no fewer.
Did you know who controlled the city?
We were sure the city had been taken by the National Guard and that they were looking for us. (...) Someone told me that only three guys survived from the first truck. There was panic and terror. Someone told me that one guy blew himself up with a grenade to avoid being taken prisoner by the Ukrainians. They didn't understand that they were being attacked by their own people. Someone apparently told local militiamen that Right Sector [a Ukrainian nationalist group that was part of the Maidan protest movement] fighters were rushing down the highway in two trucks.
What was the official story?
//česar seveda ne smemo priznati, slabo za moralo
On television they said something like that the militias were transporting unarmed wounded under the sign of the red cross and Ukrainian forces fired on them. At that point, I still didn't know we'd been attacked by our own forces. I was sure it was the National Guard. Sometime in the morning of the 27th, two guys from the cover group that remained at the airport woke me up. They told me that it was friendly fire.
We were asking what to do next. We decided to run away during the night, secretly, on foot, back to the border and to Russia.

Akcija se začne nekje po 6. minuti, na polovici. Precej hitro postane jasno, zakaj je bilo potrebno poslati regularno rusko vojsko, sicer bi bilo šova ekspresno konec.

Ukraine plans to submit war-crimes claims against Russia at the Hague ICC as early as April this year. This is significant, among other things, as it may establish facts relating to #MH17 shoot-down earlier than the JIT court case will.
Part of the evidence to be submitted includes hard evidence of shelling civilian areas in Ukraine from Russian territory. Mark your calendar.

The Security Service of Ukraine, the SBU, has uploaded on its YouTube channel audio files of intercepted communications between Dmitry Utkin, head of the private military company (PMC) Wagner (...) and General of the Russian Armed Forces, Yevgeny Nikiforov (call sign "Tambov").
On January 27, 2015, the two men discuss the deployment of Wagner’s militants and military equipment to combat positions in the Ukrainian territory, the SBU claims. The Russian General instructs that Utkin warn his militants not to shoot at the armored vehicles that he had deployed there earlier and that they would see on their way as they approach their positions. “Don’t let them shoot! As they will approach their positions, in the forest to their left side there will be tanks, infantry fighting vehicles… Seven MBTs, 5 IFVs, 2 APCs… at their firing positions.”
A short extract of the two men’s conversation intercepted the next day, January 28, 2015
...
“They're kicking our a***s already, Yevgeny Valerievich,” Utkin is heard shouting, still addressing the General by his first name and patronymic as to his senior, but with a hint of criticism. After being told to retreat, he says he had already made this decision himself and that his unit is already backing off.
