France and Poland clashed on Wednesday as ambassadors failed to settle a dispute over who should get the EU’s joint contracts to buy Ukraine ammunition — just local firms, or also competitors elsewhere — according to three diplomats familiar with the situation.
EU ambassadors were trying to unblock an impasse over how to enact a plan to jointly purchase ammunition for Ukraine in its fight against Russia. The idea is that EU countries will band together and draw money from a communal pot to help deliver Kyiv up to 1 million shells in the next 12 months.

Supply-chain snarls are still hindering efforts by weapons makers to produce more arms for Ukraine and refill stocks for the U.S. and its allies.
Lockheed Martin Corp. LMT -0.92% said Tuesday that sales of its long-range missiles known as the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System, or GMLRS, fell in the latest quarter from a year ago. The U.S. has shipped hundreds to Ukraine, where they have been widely used against invading Russian forces.
Big U.S. arms makers are taking longer than expected to boost production despite billions of dollars in support from the Pentagon. Defense companies plan to fulfill contracts by buying machinery from overseas to make more in-demand artillery shells.

Nisi še slišal da imajo Rusi svoj sistem satelitske navigacije? Nekam preveč podcenjujete nasprotnika, to nikoli ni dobro.
GLONASS @ Wikipedia
Why Russian Space Satellites Are Failing in the Ukraine War
Yet despite a huge array of hypersonic and other guided missiles and smart bombs, Russia has not been able to conduct precision strikes. “Because of a lack of reconnaissance capability, Russia is not able to use its high-precision weapons in the planned way,” Luzin told Popular Mechanics. “That’s why Russia started its campaign of missile terror against the cities and civil population of Ukraine.”
https://www.popularmechanics.com/milita...
Why is Russia not using GLONASS?
The main reason is that the Russian forces themselves are in dire need of GPS. In fact, GPS receivers are very popular, much cheaper and easier to use than Glonass receivers. As evidence, downed Russian fighters were found to have civilian GPS receivers attached to their dashboards.

BREAKING: American-made Abrams tanks that Ukrainians will use for training will arrive in Germany in the next few weeks, allowing soldiers to begin learning to use the much-anticipated armor, according to two DoD officials.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is expected to announce the move at a Friday press conference after the eleventh meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group here at @RamsteinAirBase
The 31 M1A1 Abrams tanks — a Ukrainian battalion’s worth — will arrive at the Grafenwoehr Training Area in Germany by mid-to-late May, according to the officials. The training will begin a week or two later, after the tanks go through a maintenance period.
The training on how to operate and maintain the Abrams is expected to take up to 10 weeks and may include instruction on how to maneuver in combat, the official said. Some 250 Ukrainians are expected to go through the training program, which is run by 7th Army Training Command.
The tanks the Ukrainian armed forces will train on in Germany are different from the ones that will eventually arrive in Ukraine for use on the battlefield, the first DoD official added, noting that those are still being refurbished.

Russian ethnonationalism on display.
“Who cares about your passport,” he says.
In their worldview, what really matters is your blood. Because of this, they have two words for “Russian:”
русский — ethnically Russian
Russian citizen
Only the former matters to him. This is the case for the majority of Russians, particularly in places like Moscow and Saint Petersburg, where, unless you're "Slavic" (euphemism for "white"), you can't get a job or rent an apartment.
They even have a pop song about this. To a lot of Russians, the fact that Ukrainians aren’t Russian (as in, “русские” russkiye, not “россияне” rossiyane) is unfathomable because:
✅ many Ukrainians are white
✅ many Ukrainians can speak Russian
✅ many Ukrainians (including myself) have Russian-sounding names
The existence of Ukrainians who are
- non-white
- don’t and don’t want to speak Russian
- don’t identify as Russian
- don’t associate with Russian culture
is generally considered an aberration in Russia.
People like that are labeled “nationalists” or “nazis” and exterminated.
See how this works?
You are a “nationalist” (pejorative) if you aren’t willing to be assimilated and/or are visibly different. Your country a priori doesn’t exist, and your culture is simply a subset of the great Russian culture.
This is what we’re dealing with here.
For the record: @mariamposts is Ukrainian, Afghan Ukrainian. Fuck that guy.

Russia's favourite military pop star, Shaman, has gone full-on fascist in his latest video, "Us", a hymn to "Us: the great strength that has united our country for a thousand years!"
Just look at this. Fucking bonkers. [video]
Shaman's previous stuff was all blood and soil native conservatism - "I am Russian" has become something of an official soundtrack to the war - but this is next level.
This dude is only 31. Pretty much a nobody before the war. Now pushed non-stop by government propaganda channels. He may not believe any of the patriotism nonsense - who knows? - but he's doing serious numbers: the new video has 665,000 YouTube views and 67,000 likes in *one day*
So maybe he's just making a quick wartime buck, but this is wild stuff. The language of us vs. them, 1000-year Reichs, the visions of perfect national symbolism and white male bodies? That's fascistic, gang.
Oh, and when Shaman's not releasing fascist pop anthems, he's performing in occupied Ukraine to get kids to join the state's military youth groups.
https://unherd.com/2023/04/russias-yout...
These are exactly the phenomena of fascist youth culture that I'm interested in in my new Z Generation book: a fascism that exists not so much in mass rallies and party institutions as constantly seeping through the permafrost of Russia's online cultures.
Here are the words to this cheery fash pop anthem.

Kaj jim ni jasno, a so jim povsem zamrle neke osnove vzročno posledičnih razmerij?

But in the West, the eerie calm across much of Ukraine’s frozen battlefield, apart from the meat grinder of Bakhmut, has brought a sense of unease. Many are wondering: What’s the holdup for an offensive? For weeks, top Ukrainian officials—from President Volodymyr Zelensky on down—have been telegraphing that they will not start another major military onslaught on Russian lines without more weapons from the United States and the West.
In late March, Zelensky said in a message on his Telegram that Ukraine could not begin its renewed counteroffensive until Western nations sent more weapons, including artillery, tanks, and high mobility rocket artillery. Western officials have also, to date, rebuffed Ukrainian requests for F-16 fighter jets and long-range rocket artillery that can reach Russian lines, which have moved out of the 40-plus mile range of U.S.-provided guided multiple launch rockets that the Pentagon began sending to Ukraine last summer.
“We are waiting for ammunition to arrive from our partners,” Zelensky said in an interview with Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper in late March.
The Ukrainian leader added that the counteroffensive “can’t start yet—we can’t send our brave soldiers to the front line without tanks, artillery, and long-range rockets.”
And the call from Kyiv is growing louder. Echoing the frustration in Kyiv, Oleksiy Danilov, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, told The Associated Press in an interview on Tuesday that Ukraine was frustrated with some allies that “promise one thing and do a completely different one.” Even though he said Ukraine’s allies are working to build up Kyiv’s military to the level of capability needed to take the fight to Russian lines, he added that if Ukraine isn’t ready, “nobody will start unprepared.”
The spring thaw has brought top-of-the-line German Leopard tanks to Ukraine and the promise of U.S.-provided Abrams tanks arriving in their wake. But in the corridors of Kyiv, there is concern that it’s too little, too late. U.S. officials will admit—on the record, even—that Abrams tanks are months away from arriving as the Pentagon looks at its stocks to see what it can send. And worse yet, the Leopard tanks arriving from eight different countries fire different rounds, meaning that Ukrainians can’t buy munitions for their newly tricked-out ground forces in bulk. Until the cavalry arrives, Ukraine remains a paper Leopard.
Sasha Ustinova, a Ukrainian lawmaker, told Foreign Policy that the U.S. military delivered far less than what Valeriy Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s top general, has asked for from the Pentagon. But U.S. military aid is only coming in dribs and drabs, with the Biden administration nearing the end of funding for weapons left that it can pull off of Pentagon shelves to give to the Ukrainians. Ustinova said that Ukraine hoped to begin the offensive in April, but the lack of weapons has pushed the launch date back indefinitely.
“We, as a military, want to have all the weapons now, but of course it’s impossible in the current situation,” said one Ukrainian military official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Of course we need the jets, but it’s not a question of the coming months, to be honest.”
The United States is set to announce on Thursday plans to send Ukraine $325 million in additional ammo and anti-armor weapons at a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Germany, Politico first reported. The prospects of F-16 fighter jets and long-range U.S. Army Tactical Missile Systems are still tied down in internal debates, leading to frustration on Capitol Hill.
“It is beyond time that this administration, along with our allies, provide Ukraine with the weapons they need to win,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul said at a hearing earlier on Wednesday. “We need to do more than just give Ukraine enough for survival.” Some Western officials, concerned about the long lead time for training Ukrainian pilots and maintaining jets, have hinted that F-16s could be provided to Ukraine in a post-invasion scenario as a long-term deterrent.

Neresno, če to ni maskirovka...

❗️ What options did the Armed Forces of Ukraine have in Artyomovsk (Bakhmut): analysis of the military chronicle
On April 20 and 21, there were reports that the fighters of the Wagner PMC, with fire support from the Airborne Forces, approached the O-0506 highway between Artyomovsk and Chasovy Yar. After that, the position of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Artyomovsk may deteriorate significantly.
What is this track and why is it so important?
Highway O-0506 connected the western fortified area of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Chasovoy Yar directly with the city. It passes through the village of Khromovo (Artyomovskoye), through which the Armed Forces of Ukraine got directly from Chasov Yar to the western quarters of Bakhmut. Before the advancement of PMC "Wagner" inside the city blocks, it was possible to get to Bakhmut in another way - through the southwestern highway T-0504, bypassing Krasnoe (Ivanovskoye).
Route O-0506 was the last relatively safe road that could bring in supplies and reinforcements and take out the wounded.
What is happening in Artyomovsk now
As the “orchestra” moved deeper into Artyomovsk, fire control over the supply routes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine increased, as a result of which the Ukrainian troops began to lose up to 90% of the equipment and people sent to Artyomovsk not only from Chasov Yar, but also from Konstantinovka, Druzhkovka, Toretsk.
At the moment, the Armed Forces of Ukraine retain control of no more than 10% of the city: Ukrainian troops are in the Novy and Cherema microdistricts, schools No. 18 and are defending from the street. Chernyakhovsky in Khromov. The "Orchestra" is crushing the enemy from the north in the area of Metallurgists Boulevard and Rose Alley, in parallel - on units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which are trying to leave the city in small groups in one or two cars. For targets both in the immediate vicinity of Artyomovsk and in the depths of the defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine - Konstantinovka, Druzhkovka and Chasovoy Yar - FAB-120/250 bombs with planning and correction modules (MPK), as well as Krasnopol guided artillery shells, are actively used. This allows you to further complicate and slow down the supply of a grouping that cannot hold out without help.
What options does the APU have?
The first option is to throw reinforcements into the city and either continue the defense or cover the retreat. According to preliminary estimates, the total losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in killed, wounded, missing and captured both inside Artyomovsk and around it, including reinforcements destroyed almost every day, reach 650-730 people per day.
In order to hold the city, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are preparing to send the 93rd mechanized brigade and the reserve of the 117th territorial defense brigade to Artyomovsk, prepared for the counteroffensive. In the western quarters of the city, these troops are to reinforce units of the 92nd Specialized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, whose losses are estimated at 65%.
The second option is to retreat along asphalt roads.
Most of the roads between Artyomovsk and neighboring cities are not only shot through by the artillery of the “orchestra” and the Airborne Forces, but are also seriously damaged. Some bridges and crossings cannot be crossed by heavy vehicles. This means that on the other side, the retreating units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine must change to another vehicle. It is almost impossible to do this safely.
The third option is to retreat across the fields
It has been raining in Artyomovsk for almost the entire past week, and it will continue to rain next week. Because of this, the fields will again turn into impassable terrain. It will be difficult to quickly break through them in such conditions even with tanks, not to mention pickup trucks and other vehicles.
Any stuck equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will almost instantly fall under artillery fire and be disabled, and after that, the Ukrainian military will have to overcome the five-kilometer section between Chasovy Yar and Artyomovsk on foot.
The fourth option is a distracting flank counterattack
If the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine feels that control over Artyomovsk is completely lost, the 80,000-strong reserves from Ray-Aleksandrovka, Konstantinovka, Predtechino, Nikolaevka and Dzerzhinsk will probably be brought into battle.
