Leaked docs expose massive Syria propaganda operation waged by Western govt contractors and media

https://thegrayzone.com/2020/09/23/syri...

Western government-funded intelligence cutouts trained Syrian opposition leaders, planted stories in media outlets from BBC to Al Jazeera, and ran a cadre of journalists. A trove of leaked documents exposes the propaganda network.

ARK apparently had operatives on the ground inside Syria at the beginning of the regime-change attempt in 2011, reporting to the UK FCO that "ARK staff are in regular contact with activists and civil society actors whom they initially met during the outbreak of protests in spring 2011.

Once again the Center for Reconciliation, a Russian military organisation, is spreading claims of imminent “false flag” chemical attacks in Syria.
This is a standard tactic that’s been employed for some time. They’ve never released any solid evidence in support of their claims.
We looked at these claims in 2018. The frequent and repeated claims of “irrefutable evidence” of “imminent” false flag chemical attacks were never supported by any solid evidence. Despite 22 claims of “imminent” false flag cw attacks, none ever happened.
https://www.bellingcat.com/news/mena/20...

This tactic is designed to normalise the idea that “false flag” cw attacks are happening in Syria. The more we hear a piece of information, the more likely we are to believe it’s true, despite a complete lack of evidence.
The Russian Center for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in Syria (to give it’s full name) is a front to launder this pretty blatant propaganda.

You can check out our spreadsheet of these claims from 2018 here:

Just two OPCW members had disputes with narrow aspects of the investigation. There wasn't a coverup, the report wasn't suppressed, and the two OPCW members weren't replaced or part of the original team. Maté's confused inspection team with analysts who evaluated their findings.
Maté falsely suggests the bureaucrat Bustani is a scientist. The engineer Henderson is also not a scientist. The internal complaints about the chemistry and cannister were addressed, Maté dishonestly claims they haven't been.
Maté says the OPCW backed US claims that there was a chlorine attack. The US actually claimed the attack was a nerve agent attack. The OPCW report totally undermines the justification for US strikes on nerve agent facilities in 2018, while implicating Assad for using chlorine.
The exact same “suppressed” report he’s quoting from says the Russian military fabricated evidence of a rebel chemical weapons facility.

The leaked document Aaron is referring to contains multiple examples of Russian and Regime forces manipulating evidence and crime scenes while proving local activists tried to facilitate OPCW access to bodies while the regime curtailed access.
The interim report definitively states evidence of staging by the opposition is “based on little or no evidence.”
The leaked report contains startling details, confirming prior reports that Civil Defense raced to provide the OPCW with transparent info on the locations of bodies while the regime blocked inspectors but bussed in sympathetic “reporters.”
OPCW declined exhumation for a reason Aaron Mate would like us to ignore, the reason Assad switched to chlorine from sarin the minute he was hit; you can’t test for it in dead bodies.

Mustafa Khalifa @ Wikipedia

https://en.qantara.de/content/interview...

Born in Jarablus, northern Syria, in 1948, writer and novelist Mustafa Khalifa became a political activist during his youth, joining the clandestine Communist Labour Party. Such allegiance exacted a heavy price. Khalifa spent 15 years in hiding and two extended spells in prison. Following his release, Khalifa was prohibited from leaving Syria until 2006, after which he settled in the UAE. A few years ago, he relocated to Paris.

https://newlinesmag.com/first-person/af...

This was visible in the very first stages of the protests in 2011. They began in a cautious, apprehensive manner, fearful of the reaction of the regime, and demands were initially limited to freedom and dignity. These early protests implicitly indicated that people would accept the Assad regime if it improved their quality of life in Syria, but the regime’s response was bloody: It can brook no dissent, no challenge, however limited. In the face of this brutal response, and seeing how the protests spread throughout the country, people began demanding the overthrow of the regime after perhaps six or seven weeks.

...

In a society like Syria, which contains many strongly rooted, subnational identities (ethnic groups, religions, and sects), there will be conflict among the parties over the distribution of power and wealth. This conflict may take different forms, including civil war, and can arise in one of the following cases: either when one of the parties considers itself treated unfairly, believing that its share of power and wealth is not commensurate with its size or potential, or when one of these parties decides to seize power and wealth, flouting the rights and shares of other parties.

The latter situation happened in 1966, when a group of officers belonging to three minority communities (Alawite, Druze, and Ismaili) seized power. (...) After they succeeded, conflict emerged between them, until Hafez al-Assad resolved matters — in his favor — in 1970. Regardless of whether al-Assad himself was sectarian or not, since this date the Alawites have gradually gained power, and subsequently wealth, and they have ruled the country through repression and corruption. This did not change when Hafez’s son, Bashar, came to power in 2000.

...

Sectarianism, as properly understood in the Syrian political context, is the war that the Assads and their gang have waged and are waging on Syria. The silent civil war. This is not how we came to hear about it in the past decade, with claims that the rebels were reacting to the regime because of old sectarian hatreds. Rather, it is because Hafez established a minority rule that grew into the sectarian political order we see now, which the revolution demands to be overturned in favor of a truly nationalist project. If not pursuing such a nationalist, inclusive agenda, the conflict will only prolong, even entrench, the civil war — either latent as it has been since the 1960s, or active as we saw after 2011, as well as briefly in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

...

The Alawite minority itself is a victim of this sectarian disorder. All three machines of persecution the regime were drawing on to suppress the revolution were majority Alawite, a decision made by the regime for reasons of trust stemming from existing allegiances such as family ties: the elite forces in the Syrian army under the leadership of Maher al-Assad; the security services; and the shabiha divisions, armed thugs organized into militias seemingly without rules, signaled by their name that means “ghost.”

...

And what about ordinary Alawites? Some of this tiny sect benefited disproportionately over the past 60 years, and they have been protected from the more horrific aspects of the conflict, but they are now a minority without men — the toll of war. They have paid a high price for their loyalty to al-Assad. Estimates are hard to come by, but most agree that they lost tens of thousands of their youth and men. The minority is small, and the cost enormous.

The silent civil war existed in Syria throughout the period that I called the foundation stage. Had the Syrian revolution been successful in its first phase — from March 2011 and beyond mid-2012 — the civil war that already existed in the country would have ended. Instead, the conflict gained another aspect in the form of a counterrevolutionary force.

This marked the second phase of the conflict, when the opposition became increasingly weaponized. Reality became more complex; what started in the first phase as a tyrannical regime against revolutionary movements that sought to establish a civil state now had a third party that became increasingly more powerful. This was the Islamist wing, including the Islamic State group and Jabhat al-Nusra (formerly al Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria, currently known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham), that did not and does not believe in the revolution’s plan or objectives. This party, although against the Assad regime, certainly does not belong to the revolutionary camp, as seen in its behavior on the ground when it waged a brutal war against all the revolutionary forces of civil and media activists. It seemed like there was some form of agreement between them and al-Assad, as both considered the revolutionary forces to be the number one danger.

That piqued my interest & in the days since, employees of al-Atareb hospital (associated with @sams_usa) gathered all the shell debris, removed it to a safe site & photographed it for analysis.
It soon became clear we were looking at *certain* evidence of Krasnopol munitions.

Thanks to a small team of munitions & geospatial analysts (@blueboy1969, @ain92ru, @CalibreObscura, @obretix, @N_Waters89, @EliotHiggins), much of the debris can be directly attributed to laser-guided Krasnopol shells. Some individual debris items amount to Krasnopol "fingerprints."
Intriguingly, some of the debris found in al-Atareb aligns closely with debris discovered at the site of Krasnopol laser-guided artillery strikes in #Ukraine -- as shown here (top image: #Atareb / bottom images: #Ukraine)
https://informnapalm.org/en/russian-occ...

Laser-guided artillery munitions require a target ‘designator’ — which in this case, was almost certainly a #Russia UAV.
48hrs after the strike, Telegram channels used by #Russian troops began sharing this video, proving a [Ural-series] UAV was overhead:

Thanks to @nytimes investigations, we know #Russia has hit UN-deconflicted targets using air-to-ground precision weapons -- but this is the 1st evidence of precision ground-to-ground munitions being used for such sensitive strikes.
It implicates @mod_russia in another war crime.

This appears to be solid evidence of the first precision ground-to-ground attack by Russian forces on a deconflicted (where co-ordinates are passed to the UN to prevent attacks) hospital in Syria.
There’s lots of evidence Russian forces have deliberately carried out airstrikes on hospitals in Syria (see below) but the use of precision artillery is new.

Erasing people through disinformation: Syria and the “anti-imperialism” of fools

Since the beginning of the Syrian uprising ten years ago, and especially since Russia intervened in Syria on behalf of Bashar al-Assad, there has been a curious and malign development: the emergence of pro-Assad allegiances in the name of “anti-imperialism” among some who otherwise generally identify as progressive or “left,” and the consequent spread of manipulative disinformation that routinely deflects attention away from the well-documented abuses of Assad and his allies. Portraying themselves as “opponents” of imperialism, these individuals routinely exhibit a highly selective attention to matters of “intervention” and human rights violations; one which often aligns with the governments of Russia and China. Those who disagree with their highly-policed views are frequently (and falsely) branded as “regime change enthusiasts” or dupes of Western political interests.

...

Their reactionary, inverted realpolitik is as fixated on top-down, anti-democratic “power politics” as that of Henry Kissinger or Samuel Huntington, just with the valence reversed. But this maddeningly oversimplifying rhetorical move (“flipping the script,” as one of them once put it), as appealing as it might be to those eager to identify who the “good guys” and “bad guys” are at any given place on the planet, is really an instrument of tailored flattery for their audiences about the “true workings of power” that serves to reinforce a dysfunctional status quo and impede the development of a truly progressive and international approach to global politics; one that we so desperately need, given the planetary challenges of responding to global warming.

The evidence that US power has itself been appallingly destructive, especially during the Cold War, is overwhelming.
All across the globe, from Vietnam to Indonesia to Iran to Congo to South and Central America and beyond, the record of massive human rights abuses accumulated in the name of fighting Communism is clear.

...

But America is not central to what has happened in Syria, despite what these people claim. The idea that it somehow is, all evidence to the contrary notwithstanding, is a by-product of a provincial political culture which insists on both the centrality of US power globally as well as the imperialist right to identify who the “good guys” and the “bad guys” are in any given context.

...

Syrians who directly opposed the Assad regime, often at great cost, did not do so because of some Western imperialist plot, but because decades of abuse, brutality, and corruption were and remain intolerable. To insist otherwise, and support Assad, is to attempt to strip Syrians of all political agency and endorse the Assads’ longstanding policy of domestic politicide, which has deprived Syrians of any meaningful say in their government and circumstances.

In to vse v Republiki Irak, kjer pod močnim nadzorom ZDA še vedno potekajo demokratične volitve in imamo vsaj na papirju demokracijo.
