Pac-Man ::

A couple of observations.
The only immediate effect is that Syria is not allowed to vote or hold any positions at @OPCW. This is a slap on the wrist given how blatant and brazen Syria's violations of the #CWC have been. However, the decision is a milestone in accountability.
Members of the @OPCW can and should do more. If Syria remains in non-compliance with the #CWC by the next Conf of States Parties, the Conf should refer the case to UNSC. Yes, I know Russia will use its veto to protect Syria--but (at least) 3 good reasons to do so.

1. Will provide very public platform for evidence of Syrian non-compliance, including use of CW. @OPCW has not been a good forum for that so far.
2. Force Russia to pay a heavy diplomatic price for supporting its CW-using, treaty-breaking ally. That Russia and Syria were only able to muster 13 other No votes means they are isolated.
3. Members of @OPCW need to use every avenue under the #CWC to bring Syria back into compliance--cannot leave UNSC referral unused just because of possible Russian veto.
4. The alternative is allowing Syria to remain member of #CWC in perpetual non-compliance and suffer no meaningful consequences--not good for the CW nonproliferation regime and bad precedent for future non-compliance cases.
The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or
the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and

So @DiEM_25 — the ironically named "Democracy in Europe Movement" founded by @yanisvaroufakis — is not hosting just one, or two, but three genocide-deniers, including one employee of the Russian disinformation service. All three are apologists for Assad, Xi, and Putin.
Last year @yanisvaroufakis's sister project @ProgIntl invited Syria's dissident intellectual @YassinHSaleh to speak at their conference before rescinding to appease the tankies in its ranks. These movements are neither progressive nor democratic.

Yassin al-Haj Saleh @ Wikipedia

Yassin al-Haj Saleh (Arabic: ياسين الحاج صالح‎; born 1961)[1] is a Syrian writer and political dissident. He writes on political, social and cultural subjects relating to Syria and the Arab world.[1]
From 1980 until 1996, he spent time in prison in Syria for his membership in the left-wing opposition group Syrian Communist Party (Political Bureau),[2] which he calls a "communist pro-democracy group".[3]
However, he has also stated that his time in prison allowed him to break out of the "internal prisons [of] narrow political affiliation [and] rigid ideology", and has called the Syrian revolution an "open-ended and multi-leveled struggle", while remaining supportive of aspects of Marxism.[2]

...

Al-Haj Saleh is married to Samira Khalil, a communist dissident, former political detainee and a revolutionary activist abducted in Douma in December 2013.[7] After 21 months of hiding in Damascus and whole Syria, for being wanted by both the government and radical Islamist militants, he fled to Turkey and lived in Istanbul until 2017. Al-Haj Saleh is now a fellow at Berlin Institute for Advanced Study (Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin).[8]

Samira Khalil @ Wikipedia

Samira Khalil (Arabic: سميرة الخليل‎) is a Syrian dissident, former political detainee and a revolutionary activist from the Homs region of Syria. She was arrested and detained for four years from 1987-1991 for her opposition to the Al-Assad government in Syria.[1] Khalil is currently missing after being abducted in Douma on December 9, 2013, along with fellow activists Razan Zaitouneh, Wael Hamada, and Nazem Hammadi.[2]

https://www.hrw.org/news/2014/12/09/syr...

The prominent Syrian human rights defenders Razan Zaitouneh, Samira al-Khalil, Wael Hamada, and Nazem Hammadi – the Douma Four – remain missing a year after their abduction, 71 organizations said today. The four were abducted in Douma, a city near Damascus under the control of armed opposition groups. They should be released immediately, the groups said.
On December 9, 2013, at about 10:40 p.m., a group of armed men stormed into the office of the Violations Documentation Center in Syria (VDC), a Syrian human rights monitoring group, in Douma and abducted Razan Zaitouneh, the head of the center, and her colleagues – Wael Hamada, who is also her husband, Samira al-Khalil, and Nazem Hamadi. The four human rights defenders have not been heard of since.
The armed groups exercising de facto control over Douma include the Army of Islam, headed by Zahran Alloush, which is part of the Islamic Front, a coalition of armed groups.

Over the years Bellingcat has become increasingly involved with the justice and accountability community, and what's become increasingly clear is how utterly detached most of the online debate about things like chemical weapon use in Syria are from the work of that community.
...
If you spend a lot of time debating these things online you might imagine that’s the entire debate, when in reality it’s barely a circus sideshow in terms of the real work being done towards justice and accountability.
Effectively a lot of it is performative outrage which confuses clicks with real world impact. Getting invited to a UN side meeting to deny war crimes on behalf of Russia might make you feel important, but in terms of serious accountability work it’s not even a blip.
...
The justice and accountability community has meanwhile focused on putting together cases in various courts, like this one in France in relation to chemical attacks in 2013, and continue its efforts to do it elsewhere.

Probably the best work I've seen on the scale of the use of chemical weapons in Syria, and the logic behind it, is by @GPPi
https://www.gppi.net/2019/02/17/the-log...
They've got a great online portal where you can find lots of information about chemical attacks in Syria, details you'll rarely find anywhere else
https://chemicalweapons.gppi.net/
Their data portal contains details of 349 chemical attacks in Syria. Most of nosiest denialists could barely name 5, let alone 349, because ultimately they have an incredibly shallow understanding of the topic.
