Altmaier said Monday his meeting with Brouillette was simply an opportunity to "discuss the development of the LNG import market with companies and energy industry federations" from both sides of the Atlantic.

"Competitive prices" for gas were a precondition of any import business, he underlined.

http://visegradrevue.eu/gas-in-central-...
There are two major problems with these LNG proposals. First is the cost. Świnoujście is expected to cost €720 million, Adria LNG €600 million. In the case of the Croatian project, it is not certain who will pay the bill. In the case of Poland, the short-term financial impact on state companies squeezed by the Russian long-term prices from one side and by the home market prices from the other side is considerable.

The other problem is the future of LNG prices. While they are lower than oil-indexed prices today, they may be higher tomorrow. The global demand-supply curve will drive the price of LNG. Europe's demand alone will not be the primary price-setter on the world market. If unconventional gas is developed profitably and with environment safeguards, global gas demand will increase by more than half between 2010 and 2035, predicts the IEA. But it will do so differently in different world regions. Although both China and India have their own unconventional reserves, they may drive up demand in the short- to medium-term.

Despite Trump's incentives, U.S. utilities are shutting coal-fired plants and shifting to gas, wind and solar power. Ailing U.S. mining companies are therefore boosting exports to Asia and seeking new buyers among eastern European countries trying to diversify from Russian supplies.

Trump, who championed U.S. coal producers on the campaign trail, pressed the message after meeting Poroshenko. "Ukraine already tells us they need millions and millions of metric tons right now," he said in a speech nine days later. "We want to sell it to them, and to everyone else all over the globe who need it."

In July Ukrainian state-owned energy company Centrenergo announced the deal with U.S. company Xcoal for the supply of up to 700,000 tonnes of anthracite.

Centrenergo initially said it would pay $113 per tonne for the first shipment, a price industry experts and traders told Reuters was expensive compared with alternatives.

What so many who’ve never reported from Ukraine don’t get: Many of the country’s political elite are not pro-Western or pro-Russian. They are — as Masha Yovanovitch rightly says about Avakov — pro-themselves.
Even Yanukovych wasn’t pro-Russian until he needed to be, near the end

Heard (and recorded) the same in exact same words from Aleksey Chadayev, the official author of Sovereign Democracy, the book. That was right after his stint with Yanukovych’s campaign in 2004.
“Pro-Western” vs “pro-Russian” is in fact a very Soviet-styled and un-journalistic *us against them*, nash vs nenash, marker. Western media, myself included, could avoid using it in most cases, because it’s neither accurate, nor helpful.
Interestingly, Russian media, including propaganda, doesn’t use this dichotomy that much, despite the demonization of the West. It just sounds wrong to call someone like Yanukovych “pro-Russian” because he is a situational ally.

Erik Prince, founder of the now defunct Blackwater security firm and a supporter of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential run, appears to have misled the U.S. Congress on details of contact he had with a Russian banker in January 2017, Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report released on Thursday shows.

The report’s detailing of an encounter Prince had in the Seychelles with Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund who reports directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin, contained discrepancies with testimony that Prince gave in November 2017 to the U.S. House of Representatives Intelligence Committee.

Dolgoletni dopisnik iz Ukrajine o uvozu medijskega močvirja iz D.C.-ja v Kijev.

I’ve Reported In Ukraine For 10 Years. Please Read This Before You Say Anything Else About Impeachment.

...

In the decade that I’ve lived in and reported from Ukraine, I’ve seen some crazy shit — a bloody revolution, the first land grab in Europe since World War II, and the shooting down of a passenger plane that killed nearly 300 people. And then, of course, we had Zelensky, the comedian who played an accidental president on TV, get elected to be the actual president. But I’ve never seen anything like the sideshow that Ukraine has become for Americans trying to understand this country’s role in one of the biggest political stories to rock DC in years.

In recent weeks, hordes of journalists from across the world — but especially from DC — have brought the swamp to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv (and yes, it’s Kyiv, not Kiev, if you’re spelling it the Ukrainian way). They’ve filled up the pricey Hyatt, Hilton, and InterContinental hotels usually booked with businesspeople and diplomats. They’ve come in hopes of snagging that perfect quote or soundbite from Zelensky, the one that will bury Trump or save him, depending on the outlet they represent. It doesn’t seem to matter if they’re able to actually get it. As one American reporter from a major network whom I overheard talking with her camera operator recently put it, “As long as you can get Zelensky in the shot and me asking the question, we’re good.”

Besides hounding Zelensky, reporters have also bombarded those of us who’ve reported in Ukraine for years. “Hey! Love your Ukraine reporting! Wanna grab a coffee or a drink?” they’ve said — code for “Tell me all your secrets and give me your sources, and I’ll put your $1 Lvivske beer on the company card.” And when we’ve offered contacts — some whose trust we’ve spent years trying to earn — these outsiders have bombarded them with queries too, and often mischaracterized their words, actions that ultimately forced many underground.

The reporters come flying in like flaming meteorites. And they leave with the earth scorched behind them.

Do they even care? That’s not me wondering (although I do wonder); it’s the many Ukrainians whom I see every day asking me for insight into just what the fuck is going on. They’re worried about the picture that reporters and talking heads are painting of their country of 40 million people, which is struggling to root out corruption, trying to jumpstart its economy, and fighting for literal survival in a war fueled by an authoritarian ruler — Russia’s Vladimir Putin — who is hell-bent on seeing it collapse. And a scan of US media suggests their concerns are warranted.

...

“Look, Ukraine is not about scandal. Ukraine is about opportunities right now,” Oleksiy Honcharuk, Ukraine’s 35-year-old prime minister, told me in Mariupol, a smoke-choked industrial city on the Sea of Azov, just 12 miles from the front line of the ongoing war with Russia and its separatist proxies that’s killed more than 13,000 people.

...

But that’s not what a parade of overnight experts who’ve never or rarely been to Ukraine — yet are being marched in front of TV cameras — are saying. They’re busy mangling the pronunciation of leading Ukrainian figures’ multisyllabic Slavic surnames and wrongly referring to the independent Eastern European country as the Ukraine, as it was last known almost 30 years ago when it was still a Soviet republic. A new thing I’ve noticed that has driven me up the wall is this pronouncing Ukraine as YOO-kraine. “It’s yoo-KRAINE, for fuck’s sake!” I find myself shouting at cable news before pouring 50 grams of horilka — which, as all you Ukraine experts know, is the local vodka.

Zanimivo razmišljanje Kolomojskega o tem, zakaj med Ukrajino in Rusijo ni resnega dogovora in miru:
But Mr. Kolomoisky, widely seen as Ukraine's most powerful figure outside government, given his role as the patron of the recently elected President Volodymyr Zelensky, has experienced a remarkable change of heart: It is time, he said, for Ukraine to give up on the West and turn back toward Russia.

"They're stronger anyway. We have to improve our relations," he said, comparing Russia's power to that of Ukraine. "People want peace, a good life, they don't want to be at war. And you" -- America -- "are forcing us to be at war, and not even giving us the money for it."

Verjetno bodo ostali brez Krima in v zameno dobili mirno reintegracijo Donbasa s precej avtonomije ter cenejši plin in tranzit le tega.

A pretty crazy story involving the Ukrainian politician Giuliani met with today, Andriy Derkach.
Derkach has been trying to get his government to investigate Hunter Biden.
His dad, Leonid Derkach, is a former head of Ukraine’s security services.

According to the Kyiv Post and a BBC transcript, a 2000 article suggested Andriy Derkach could be the "Ukrainian Putin" -- a successor to President Leonid Kuchma.
Per Kyiv Post, the article was discussed in a secret 2000 recording allegedly between Kuchma & Leonid Derkach.
What were Kuchma and the elder Derkach allegedly discussing on that secret recording?
Doing something about the journalist responsible for it, whom they pegged as Georgiy Gongadze, a regular critic of the Kuchma government.

Here’s a transcript, per Andrew Wilson’s book, “Ukraine’s Orange Revolution”:

KUCHMA: This Gongadze, yes?
LEONID DERKACH: Yes, yes.
KUCHMA: You can take care of him?
LEONID DERKACH: The time for him to mouth off will come to an end. I’ll crush this f***er.
In later recordings, one official says of Gongadze that they should “take him to Georgia and dump him there.” Kuchma responds, “The Chechens should kidnap him and ask for a ransom!”

See attached screenshots from Wilson’s book.
https://www.amazon.com/Ukraines-Orange-...
Gongadze was killed later that year.
Per the Baltimore Sun, his “headless body, splashed with acid, was discovered near Kiev in November 2000.”
A month later, the recordings came out. The resulting protests were seen by some as a precursor to the 2004 Orange Revolution.

In 2005 – the same year Kuchma left office -- a Ukrainian parliamentary commission labeled him and Leonid Derkach 2 of the 4 masterminds of the murder.
https://cpj.org/2005/09/inquiry-names-k...
A 3rd, former interior minister Yuri Kravchenko, was found dead earlier that year.

In 2013, Gen. Aleksei Pukach, a former top aide to Kravchenko, was convicted of Gongadze’s murder.
Gongadze's widow called for those who ordered the killing to be prosecuted too.
There are still appeals taking place by Pukach.
https://cpj.org/2019/09/man-convicted-o...

And that's how an article that called Andriy Derkach the "Ukrainian Putin" may have contributed to revolution in Ukraine, led to his dad being implicated in murder, and reverberates to this day in Ukraine ...

... where Derkach is now meeting with President Trump's lawyer.
The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or

Initially, on 15 July, the police said the arrests were part of an investigation, started about a year ago, into far-right groups "who have fought in Ukraine's Donbass region against the separatists".

But the latest police statement did not mention groups fighting the pro-Russian separatists, referring only to an investigation into Italian extremists who had "taken part in the armed conflict in Ukraine's Donbass region". The police did not make it clear which side the Italians were on in this case.

Treba bo še malo počakati.

And as such affected by an order of pre-trial detention issued by the investigating judge, with its European arrest warrant. It is openly said neo fascist.

...

The investigation sees at the center a network of neo-Nazis and left-wing extremists together, side by side and weapons in hand. The ideology that unites the opposing sides leads to Donbass, in Ukraine, where former police officers and former carabinieri, ultras and supporters of the League become contractors with the Kalashnikovs in hand to eradicate the "American cancer" in the name of the Eurasian vision celebrated by the Russian philosopher Alksandr Dugin, known as Putin's Rasputin.

...

A total of 15 suspects, in various capacities for conspiracy, combat and recruitment (...) According to the investigators, the political mind would be Krutani while the operative arm is Andrea Palmeri, former ultra of Lucca, right-wing extremist.

The surveys on the mercenary recruitment organization were launched in 2013 on the Ligurian skinhead area.
(...) They are the ones who have contacts with one of the suspects but also with Palmeri and who organize a meeting with Millennium Pec in Lavagna in 2014, where the situation in Donbass is discussed.

...

According to the investigators, it is precisely the Millennium association that is behind the recruitment of mercenaries . An organization that collects goods and medicines to send to Ukraine but that actually looks for fighters to send to Donbass in Italy. Who finances Millennium is a mystery, but investigators expect to be able to shed light through the analysis of banking movements. There would also be contacts with the pro-Russian association Essence of the time, and with Alexey Milchakov, neo-Nazi commander of the Rusich paramilitary unit.

On the occasion of the event organized by the Embassy of the Russian Federation on 9 September "exhibition 75 years since the liberation of Eastern Europe from Nazism", Mfa stated the following:

"Without denying the USSR's contribution to the defeat of Nazism in Europe, we should not close our eyes, that the bayonets of the Soviet Army brought the peoples of Central and Eastern Europe half a century of repression, the suppression of the civil conscience, the distorted economic Development and detachment from the dynamics of the processes in the developed European countries.

MFA has no relation to this event and we advise the Russian Embassy not to take a position in support of a dubious historical thesis ("Liberation"), which privileged only some political circles in Bulgaria, as it is an interference in the internal political Debate in our country.

September 9th and its consequences must remain in the knowledge of historians and historical science in order to obtain a complete and accurate assessment of the impact on Bulgaria's development in the 20th century.

From the point of view of international law the facts are clear: the Devetoseptemvrijskiât coup was a direct consequence of the declaration of War on Bulgaria by the USSR on September 5, 1944 and the subsequent entry of Soviet troops into the territory of a neutral against the USSR Bulgaria.

The USSR declared war on Bulgaria, when a new democratic government just came to power, declared a cessation of relations with Nazi Germany and confirmed the position of the neutrality of the Kingdom of Bulgaria towards Russia. It follows a temporary occupation of Bulgaria by the USSR and the Allies, which is formally administered by representatives of the Coalition, but is de facto exercised exclusively through Soviet military presence.

The long-term consequences for Bulgaria are the same as for the other countries in Eastern Europe, which fell into the Soviet zone of influence-45 years of management of totalitarian regime, leaning on the Bolshevik variant of communist ideology. "

It's actually not so complicated. Putin thinks he has the right not just to take a piece of Ukraine away from it (Crimea), but to control the country. As direct control through corrupt elites hasn't worked, he has moved towards another strategy, invasion with proxies.

This must be seen in the context of Moldova and Georgia where Russia controls / occupies parts of the country and has more or less managed to control their course. In both cases Western reactions were weak, and Putin probably expected a similar behavior in the case of Ukraine.

Ukraine however was a gamble: it is much bigger and geographically closer to the West than Georgia. But when there was no strong reaction to the annexation of Crimea, rather confusion in Europe and the US, Putin moved ahead with invading Donbas.

Yet this was too much. Germany is the swing state with regard to Russia in Europe. Merkel tipped the balance towards a pro-Ukrainian policy. She was outraged, and brought Obama, who was first detached, in. Once the US was committed, Merkel and Obama brought others in line.

Economic sanctions ("level 3") which most thought impossible became a reality. Western reaction helped Ukraine in its resistance, helped stopping Russian / proxy military advance by making Putin reconsider costs. Merkel also built an off-ramp with the Minsk agreement.

So Putin stopped, held what he had won with military means, and started to the play the long game. Over time, he expected "weak" Western democratic leaders to fall for his mix of carrots (including corruption) and sticks (threats of nuclear war).

His goals remained unchanged: control of Ukraine and good relations with the west, especially economic relations, but also prestigious summits and the ability to influence other players' behavior -- all important for the survival of his autocratic-oligarchic regime.

With Trump, he faced a U.S. president who apparently wanted a rapprochement but was held back by other powerful players in the U.S. When Macron called for a rapprochement, the crucial European front seemed to weaken. France so far had followed the German lead

Now Macron wants to take the lead himself. And he articulates, in his speech to the French ambassadors, a vision of Europe in which the US is out and Russia is in. That's exactly what the most pro-Kremlin German "Putinversteher" have always dreamed of. Music in Putin's ears.

Yet it is unclear whether Macron wants to pay real costs to move ahead with a rapprochement, especially by alienating Central Europe, and it is unclear whether Merkel will effectively bloc him. That's why Putin has used the proposed Paris meeting as a test.

Putin puts conditions on the table for the "Normandy" meeting that would indicate an outcome supporting the Russian interpretation of the Minsk agreement, as a path to Russian control of Donbas. If such an outcome is not guaranteed or likely, Putin will let Macron wait.

His long game is to wait out Merkel, his key opponent in Europe. He probably thinks that after Merkel the European front will fall apart, and he has plenty of evidence: huge numbers of European politicians and leaders seeking contact and calling for reset and rapprochement.

“This decision creates an opportunity to make a fresh start in the prosecutor general’s office. I hope that the new prosecutor general will ensure that [his] office . . . becomes independent from political influence and pressure and enjoys public trust,” said Jan Tombinski, the EU’s envoy to Ukraine.

...

In what appeared to be his last act before dismissal, Mr Shokin sacked his deputy, Davit Sakvarelidze, who had repeatedly called for his boss to be fired.

Mr Sakvarelidze, a Georgian who was also chief prosecutor in the Odessa region, said his dismissal by Mr Shokin was part of “a cleansing of people who are prepared every day to fight corruption and the old guard without compromise”.

...

Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko is under huge pressure to appoint a new prosecutor general with a strong anti-corruption reputation, and to back investigations into the shadowy affairs of major businessmen and politicians.

The EU and United States are demanding as much, amid a political crisis that has paralysed reforms in Ukraine and jeopardised vital funding from international lenders.

Aside from OTT theatrics, this is a very powerful New Year address by President Zelensky which celebrates Ukraine’s diversity and portrays him as a leader for all Ukrainians, no matter what languages they speak and which political gods they worship.

Being about the only leader in Eastern Europe who actually practices good old Western liberal democratic values and rejects the madness of ethnonationalism, Zelensky looks like a dinosaur. But maybe he is the future. Definitely a breath of fresh air.

Zelensky: It doesn’t matter who your street is called after as long as it is clean and asphalted. It doesn’t matter under which monument you are meeting your date...”

I don’t think anyone in the Kremlin or in the West, who have been pushing the debilitating identitarian and ethnonationalist discourse regarding Ukraine for the last five years, can grasp how alien they have always been to a vast majority of Ukrainians.

Nit:
https://twitter.com/Mortis_Banned/statu...

in par meni novih/zanimivih, primerjava z Irsko in VB mi je sploh dobra:

I am sure the Georgians/Ukrainians/Syrians who have lost their homes and loved ones would be relieved to hear that their woes are small and insignificant compared to the larger Anglo-Euro imperialism.
The very notion that some sinister Western influence can coddle millions of people into protesting, risking their lives and health against brutal riot police, is extremely orientalist in that it denies the colonized peoples agency in favor of a trite "Great Game" narrative
The notion of the protests being a "violent coup" is ahistorical - it started entirely peaceful, and the escalation was driven by security forces - from when Berkut riot police violently dispersed a sleep-in at Kyiv's Maidan (Independence Square) in late November 2013.
Apart from the fact that this is so imperialist it hurts, consider the fact that Ukraine had had a pro-Western president bent on joining NATO.
Viktor Yuschenko, poisoned by Dioxine during the campaign, was in office from 2005 to 2010 - ample time to fast-track NATO membership.
Despite Yuschenko's aspirations, the West was not exactly keen on Ukraine joining NATO - it limited itself to an exercise in Crimea, which Americans might remember because protests against it were organized by then-Yanukovych advisor Paul Manafort.
https://taskandpurpose.com/news/manafor...

NATO was so hell-bent on invading Russia that Western troops weren't even permanently stationed in the Baltic NATO countries in 2015, a whole year after Russia started its war against Ukraine, another former Soviet republic.
https://www.dw.com/en/baltic-countries-...

Now, on to the Big Bullshit.
The Big Bullshit, which comes straight out of Russian propaganda, is "Russian-speaking = Russian".
In fact, while a quarter of Ukrainians predominantly speak Russian at home, a mere 6% identified as ethnic Russian in a 2015 poll.
https://en.interfax.com.ua/news/press-c...
https://www.pravda.com.ua/rus/news/2017...

Of course, it's more complicated - self-identity and language preferences are fluid, and not identifying with a country that's invading you or not speaking "their" language is a valid choice.
But "Russian-speaking = Russian" is equivalent to "Most Irish are English in denial".
In fact, "Most Ukrainians are Russian in denial" is a well-known Russian nationalist position.

In Ukraine under Russian Empire, Russian used to be the language of educated elites and urban communities. Russian nationalists regard Ukrainian as "funny peasant dialect" to this day.
To close the language issue, next time you hear how the fascist dictator Zelensky is going to invade Crimea and kill Russian babies any time now, remember that he is a Russian speaker himself, and his Ukrainian was not quite good during the presidential campaign back in 2019.

Using other countries for "security/self-defence" IS imperialism, my dude.
Also "NATO activity in Ukraine" is limited to a training facility in the far West of the country, the US supplying anti-tank missiles and Turkey selling Bayraktar drones (both independently from NATO).

Ok this is just unhinged, so instead of debunking, let's drive another historical comparison.
"The Anglo-French Entente seeking to bring in Czechoslovakia is a major security threat to the German Reich [insert scary arrows and an ethnic map of the Sudetenland here]".
"While certainly socialist in name only, Hitler's Germany is a major bulwark against Anglo-French imperialism, which is why any Communist must opposed the unfair Versailles treaty and Entente saber-rattling".
Back then, this was too bullshit even for Stalin, and it is so now.

Ah, the good old "Russian communists are the real opposition".
First, the KPRF are a social conservative party whose ideology is best described as "Soviet nationalism" - boomer nostalgia for Red empire and "iron hand".
Which is why it votes for all landgrabs and repressive laws
There might be real opposition within the KPRF, such as activists and MPs who supported recent Russian anti-corruption protests, but tankies would label them "shitlibs" and "CIA shills".
https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2021/02/...

Secondly and finally, the notion of a "clash of civilizations" between the Atlanteans and the Eurasians is a tenet of Duginism, a Russian far-right ideology that seeks to antagonize Russia from an amorphous "West", complete with scary maps.
In fact, Russia is a European colonial power which, due to flukes of history and its empire being contiguos, hasn't finished the decolonization process that others went through in the 20th century.
Think of the current war in Ukraine as Anglo-Irish or Franco-Algerian wars.

Ker niti mosta niso bili sposobni zgraditi do Krima.

The narrative seems to be that Azov is the willing and eager arm of the fascist Kyiv junta.
The reality is, of course, more complicated.
Azov is a multi-faceted far-right movement. Its political wing, the National Corps, regularly protests against the government.
The National Corps is also a political party — which routinely polls under 2% in national elections, less than a pro-Russian Youtuber Anatoliy Sharij.
In 2019, it ran together with Svoboda, another far-right party. The nationalist bloc barely broke 2%.
2019 Ukrainian parliamentary election @ Wikipedia

Just recently, Svoboda's leader Koshulinsky failed to win even a third of the vote in a parliamentary by-election in Ivano-Frankivsk, seen as a Svoboda stronghold.
The seat was won by president Zelensky's populist "Servant of the people".
https://ukranews.com/en/news/766903-vir...

Despite Azov's unpopularity, its outsized influence is explained by patronage from powerful security minister Arsen Avakov (an Armenian from Kharkiv, hardly a white nationalist himself, seen here with Azov's leader Andriy Biletsky).
Avakov's and larger security apparatus influence is seen as a problem in Ukraine, and people regularly protest against it.
Importantly, Azov does not enjoy patronage from the US, which labels it a "nationalist hate group"

Taking a closer look at the photos, Nazi collar tabs with Waffen SS bolts on the left and military rank on the right can be identified. Lower on the chest, a Reichsadler Eagle, can be seen. All three of these tattoos are symbols found Waffen-SS military uniforms, which was the military branch of the Nazi Party’s SS organization.

Lastly, a photo has surfaced in 2020, where a group of alleged Wagner soldiers in Syria were led by a man with a Wehrmacht hat. The photo where the alleged mercenaries receive instructions appeared on Milinfolife channel. Even though the exact location of the photo is unknown and the faces of the soldiers in the photo are blurred, the man in the wearing the hat is suspected to be Utkin. The bald head and the shape of an ear visible in the photo suggests, that the person in question could be Utkin.

Wagner was promoted during the Nazi era as one of Adolf Hitler's favourite composers. Historical perception of Wagner has been tainted with this association ever since, and there is debate over how Wagner's writings and operas might have influenced the creation of Nazi Germany.

The Pentagon appears to be making good on Washington's pledge to help Ukraine stand up to what the United States has described as "Russian aggression."
The Defense Department announced Monday a $125 million aid package for Kyiv as part of its ongoing Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.
A Pentagon statement said the package includes two armed Mark VI patrol boats to help Ukraine "patrol and defend its territorial waters."
It also includes additional training, counter-artillery radars, medical support, and satellite imagery and analysis, and improvements that will allow Ukraine to improve interoperability with NATO.
