the aircraft itself is American, while the new U740 version is being adapted by Airbus for European forces. According to Airbus's announcement, the arrangement is a commercial partnership between American defense company Kratos and European aerospace company Airbus. Airbus acquired two Valkyrie aircraft from Kratos to prepare for testing and integrate its own European mission system.
Here's how it works:
- Kratos (US): Supplies the aircraft platform.
- Airbus (Europe): Integrates its own mission software, autonomy and control systems.
- Germany: Is the intended customer for an operational system, targeted for delivery by 2029.

France is going solo on its next-gen fighter -- launching the "Super Rafale" F5 in December and a national SCAF prototype from 2027.
Four months after the Franco-German SCAF collapsed, Paris and Berlin have fully diverged. Merz is being courted by UK PM Burnham to join the British-Japanese-Italian GCAP program, while France accelerates alone. The F5 Rafale will feature AI integration, new optronics, a new engine, and a hypersonic missile carrying the latest nuclear deterrent. In parallel, the air force is launching HypAIRion, an AI-driven collaborative combat flying initiative. Source: Les Echos

Well, this was inevitable. The new Rafale version (F5) apparently showed enough promise with new sensors and improvements to SPECTRA for Dassault to firmly believe that stealth is currently being overrated, and that goes a long way to explain why they were willing to let FCAS die.
Their read on future air combat right now is that focusing heavily on stealth is simply too expensive to carry out the missions France will realistically fly. Stealth exists to operate in high-risk contested airspace, except there's maybe three countries in the world that could end up in a situation where you can even fly billions of dollars worth of aircrafts in peer-level contested airspace: the US (because of China), China (because of the US), and Taiwan (because all of their airspace is virtually contested anyway). You could add Israel to that list because they are playing with house money.
For pretty much everyone else, losing a stealth aircraft would be such a crippling blow that they would rather operate the way we've seen air combat turn out in the past few years (the India/Pakistan kerfuffle on which Dassault has extensive data, and obviously Russia and Ukraine), with everyone shooting at each other from within their own airspace. So the political and economic limits of stealth aircrafts end up crippling their combat effectiveness for all but a handful of countries at most.
Russia is using the Felon (not a stealth plane by any measure, but it was supposed to be) like a glorified glide-bomb truck, which makes it pretty much the least cost-effective military aircraft in History (special mention for the F22, the best plane that never had anything to do in the real world).
The second element for "stealth is overrated" is the triple-whammy of AI-augmented sensors (hence the huge investment in military AI), data exchange and drone buddies. Stealth effectiveness gets worse as you have more radar sources and more receptors, because radar waves don't magically disappear, they only get directed anywhere but at the emitter. If you have multiple radars and receptors all talking to each other in real time, stealth could be massively degraded and there's not much you can do to restore it.
So Dassault is gambling on the idea that in environments that actively degrade stealth, the economic tradeoffs become even worse. If you can't afford to lose a stealth-focused aircraft, you might as well have a cheaper, more visible aircraft with a larger payload and slap the strongest radar possible in there to shoot Meteors and cruise missiles from Narnia, then skedaddle while blasting EW when someone shoots back. It's less effective than the ideal scenario of a pure stealth aircraft, but it's a more realistic doctrine for a country the size of France.
Whatever Dassault end up with is probably not going to be the best or stealthiest aircraft in the world (edit: it will still be somewhat stealthy guys they're not morons). Instead they'll probably aim to make the compromises necessary to have the most cost-effective aircraft possible... It won't be made for the US or China, but for a bunch of medium powers who could end up in actual shooting wars. Better a good enough plane you can actually use than an invisible marvel you can't risk anywhere near the frontline because it's too valuable.
Francija bo imela kmalu daleč najslapša letala v Evropi in to si zaslužijo.
