How One 19-Year-Old Illinois Man Is Distorting National Polling Averages

There is a 19-year-old black man in Illinois who has no idea of the role he is playing in this election.

He is sure he is going to vote for Donald J. Trump.

And he has been held up as proof by conservatives — including outlets like Breitbart News and The New York Post — that Mr. Trump is excelling among black voters. He has even played a modest role in shifting entire polling aggregates, like the Real Clear Politics average, toward Mr. Trump.

How? He’s a panelist on the U.S.C. Dornsife/Los Angeles Times Daybreak poll, which has emerged as the biggest polling outlier of the presidential campaign.

Our Trump-supporting friend in Illinois is a surprisingly big part of the reason. In some polls, he’s weighted as much as 30 times more than the average respondent, and as much as 300 times more than the least-weighted respondent.

Alone, he has been enough to put Mr. Trump in double digits of support among black voters. He can improve Mr. Trump’s margin by 1 point in the survey, even though he is one of around 3,000 panelists.

He is also the reason Mrs. Clinton took the lead in the U.S.C./LAT poll for the first time in a month on Wednesday. The poll includes only the last seven days of respondents, and he hasn’t taken the poll since Oct. 4.

It’s worth noting that this analysis is possible only because the poll is extremely and admirably transparent: It has published a data set and the documentation necessary to replicate the survey.

Not all of the poll’s choices were bound to help Mr. Trump. But some were, and it all combined with some very bad luck to produce one of the most persistent outliers in recent elections.

1. There is great relief as Trump collapses. It is great! But there is still a lot, a hell of a lot more, to be worried about.

2. Roughly 25% (to be conservative) of electorate is bat shit angry and being led further down a path towards inconsolable anger.

3. Hang with Trump voters, listen to conservative talk radio: Clinton is a criminal. Evil. The Devil! GOP leadership are traitors & pussies.

4. Further, and more dangerously, they think the system is rigged, the media lies (even FOX!), and voting filled with fraud.

5. Talk radio is already attributing a loss to voter fraud: Like illegal immigrants smuggled into country (By Clinton) to vote (heard today)

6. Prepare for this: 80% chance Trump won’t accept loss & will incite his voters with claims of fraud with blacks/immigrants as scapegoats

7. Birther movement = not accepting legitimacy of Obama

What is coming is worse. It is not accepting legitimacy of our nation/institutions

8. Trumps campaign has transgressed so many social norms and unwritten rules – the very things that hold a country together.

9. GOP leaderships has followed.

One of the most damning things has been the behavior of the evangelical leadership, and its voters.

10. This group has always embraced (in name) those social norms & put premium on being "good" citizens.

Not now. That is out the window.

11. In Trump’s wake roughly a quarter of electorate, including some GOP leaders, will have zero respect & immense anger towards society.

12. This is dangerous stuff. When citizens no longer feel an obligation to be “good” to larger society. That is how countries break apart.

13. The sad irony is, this behavior. This decoupling from polite society. Is exactly how GOP leaders have long described inner cities

14. They talk and warn about a culture of poverty. Of no respect, and violence. No decency. Thugs. Hip-hop & low slung jeans.

15. Yet what the GOP has created in its own base is a culture of aggrievement. One that feels no attachment or obligation to larger society.

16. This culture of aggrievement now feels no accountability to anyone beyond their own
